MG F Trophy | Spotted

Maybe not the season for an MG F, but there's always time for a Trophy

It’s now a quarter of a century since the MG Z cars were launched, the Rover 25, 45 and 75 getting a sporty makeover that nobody really saw coming. It made for some cult classic performance cars, too, ones that are finally being properly recognised after years in the doldrums. It’s been heartening to see the celebrations taking place this year for 25 years of the Z cars. As well as reigniting enthusiasm for a V8 ZT…

But there was another MG launched in 2001, also significantly upgraded over the base model and offered in bright colours that tends to be forgotten about: the MG F Trophy. It was the run-out special edition for the model ahead of the TF’s arrival, but there was more than just Trophy Yellow (or Trophy Blue) to the MG F: this was the first time the 160hp K Series had been found in the middle of an MG, a useful amount more than the standard 143. Useful enough for 60mph in less than seven seconds, in fact, and 140mph. In addition, there were forged wheels, AP Racing brakes, and lower, stiffer suspension. An overhaul befitting of a Trophy badge, basically.

So it was a riot on track, keener, flatter and faster than any MG F had been up to that point. It was pretty stiff on the road, but 2001 stiff is probably borderline sumptuous by modern standards. No doubt new tyres will help comfort 25 years later as well. And nobody will be driving a Trophy every day in 2026; a bit of shake, rattle and roll might add to the experience.

This yellow one is still looking vibrant all these years later, inside and out: there really was a lot of colour for this car, all the way down to the roll hoops. But with the lower ride height and wheels as well, it does cut a dash in a way that a regular F or TF of the era wouldn’t quite. And it’s the perfect alternative to a boring old black interior. Let’s call the Trophy of its time - and it fits in with the Z cars at least.

The condition of this one must be partly attributed to the mileage, which is showing just 33,000; very few given the years and owners behind it. There are a good amount of recent services to its name, plus a head gasket cambelt three thousand miles ago. It’s unclear how many years ago that was, however, and an MOT test this month mentioned overheating, so you’ll want to investigate that.

But no 25-year-old sports car is without its flaws, and nobody is entertaining an MG F purchase in 2026 without some awareness of its shortcomings. Hopefully they’ll be aware of all that’s good about them as well, and why it might be a fun way to spend £7,995. There won’t be much else out there with so few miles, the engine in the middle, and such a modest price; an MR2’s engine won’t feel quite as exciting as that fizzy K Series. And with so few Trophys left - plus the quarter-century anniversary - they’ve surely done all their likely depreciating. Surely. Now as then, an MX-5 isn’t the only way.

Love the look of that - especially at the seemingly reasonable price of £8k.

Yeah, I like this, seems a decent price considering the rose tinted glasses seen everywhere these days!
Mates had one for about 10 years and raves about it, only paid about £1500 too for a clean one so he'll be happy!!

I'd like a go in this to see if they're as good or as bad as people make out.

You won’t be chasing rust on this like you would an MX5.

Always had a soft spot for MGf’s and particularly trophy f’s they are great fun to drive, the head gasket issue is more or less irrelevant as it can be permanently sorted, and unlike my na eunos, these seldom have structural rust issues, subframes can go but they’re replaceable far more easily than weld repairs, and the k series is a great sounding engine so sounds awesome behind you, especially at high revs. Hopefully the overheat issue mentioned is sorted, I’d expect it to be, being sold at a strong price from a dealer, so a good test drive to get it hot and see what happens is needed.
Prefer trophy blue personally but this is still great, love it.

The interior looks like as bad as one of those Skoda pick ups.

Buy an MX5 and be like everyone else. And learn how to weld.

You can tell it's from the same era as the Focus RS Mk1

I had an MGF back in period, the 140bhp VVC version. British Racing Green. It shat it's crankshaft seal within 100 miles of buying it, and the trim used to fall off.

It was however, a hoot to drive and I somehow managed to get myself, my 6' 1" girlfriend and two full sets of diving gear, incl tanks, to Holy Island in it one weekend.

As much as they were a little shonky, they drove really well and that engine was really fizzy - not sure I would pay £8,000 for one, especially with that slightly 80's lemon interior.

Designed by Gerry McGovern, back in the days when he had a Brian May perm.

Interesting car at what to me seems like a reasonable price. Colour is bloody awful though, it looks washed out and and faded like an old T shirt.

I couldn't live with that interior either.

Always had a soft spot for an MGF though never driven one. That looks lovely, would prefer a solar red TF but seems to be in good condition, low mileage etc. Dealer needs to ensure the overheating issue is sorted.
Seems a good time to buy a convertible to me, in the garage until spring then enjoy next tear.

The new price in 2001, adjusted for inflation is £41128

Given the quality of the car, that makes todays bonkers list prices look... Cheap.

The period MX-5 was OK, innit?

Anyways, a few mates drive MGF and are happy.

You'd need Trump levels of bonkerness to contemplate that. Had mgf almost new, worst built, worst reliability of any car of mine in over 30 yrs
