I acknowledge that I am OCD on my car and should chill, but really what is going on in the head of the driver who parked their car next to mine?

My car is the MX5, it is 8 months old, has some stone chips on the front, every other panel is unmarked. When I parked the car yesterday at the gym the whole section of the car park was empty. When I came out this is what I found.

Maybe they like their car too and knew you wouldn’t smash your door on theirs….

How did they know he had a cat?

I’d say that was a windup.

I do this to wind folk like you up.

Or

You parked well over to the right so the owner knew it was a safe option.

I've been parking in carparks for 35 years and never had any damage from neighbour cars.

Good for you.

I've literally seen a woman open a car door into my car quite hard to get her kid out, and then flat deny it.

I have a theory on this. They can’t park, without a car to park next to, I think they are incapable of using the white lines for alignment and need a car to do it.

I think that's a big part of it. The other car is useful as a guide to parking.

Why would you want to deliberately cause distress to someone else in your community that you have never met?

If the driver of other car truly wanted their own car protected then the end bay opposite would be better at protecting their car.

He would love the "protection" from MX5 chap so makes sense to get as close to nice car as you can.

He has a big car so that way he can avoid getting his own car damaged...

911spanker let's dive into the logic. The driver still has one side exposed parked in the center of their bay.

If they had parked in the end bay opposite as close as possible to their curb they would still only have had one side exposed with a greater gap to any car parking next to them.

I just don't see your logic when a better parking option is available to them if they want to protect their car.

For me it is a poor skill thing as megaflow said or a low capacity person who deliberately chooses to take that action for their own pleasure at believing they are causing distress to another person.

This morning I parked in a mostly empty car park

I was waiting for my son so was sat in the car when a woman in a Toyota pulled into the empty space next to my nearside leaving no more than 12" between her offside and my nearside

The wing mirrors were almost touching she was that close

She then looked directly at me and then tried to squeeze out of her car without hitting my door and managed it with the skill of Houdini

Thing is there were about 10 empty spaces to her left

Unfathomable

A survey some time ago revealed that drivers felt more 'secure' parking next to another vehicle.
