Snack scratched in pub's meat ban
Oct 18, 2005

Pork scratchings and smoky bacon crisps have been banned from a Black Country pub. Vegetarian bosses are behind the move at Katie Fitzgerald's in Wollaston.

They say drinkers at the pub near Stourbridge have been put on a strictly no-meat diet.

So they have removed the meaty products including the traditional Black Country favourite, scratchings.

Instead, landlords Eddy Morton and Trina Keane say flavours such as plain and cheese and onion are now the only crisps they sell at the pub - thought to be the first of its kind in the region.

Landlord Eddy Morton said: "We don't serve food, it is just bar snacks. But none of those is meat flavoured and there are no pork scratchings - which is probably a bit strange for a Black Country pub, but we have not had any complaints."

The news has come as a shock to some regulars such as pork scratchings fan Andrew Dyson.

He said: "I was very surprised when I went up to the bar to get a pack of scratchings to go with my pint and was told it was a vegetarian pub. It won't stop me going there, though, because it is a great place."

Vegetarian Sally Price backs the ban, and said: "I think it is great news. Even though meat flavoured crisps do not necessarily have any meat products in them it might encourage more people to think about becoming vegetarian."

So, they'll be stopping serving beer as well, then? (Isinglass is traditionally manufactured from fish)

They seem to have missed the fact that cheese and onion crisps are the least likely to be vegetarian due to containing whey powder.

Oh for God's sake! What is wrong with these people! I am a vegetarian but I don't feel the need to force my beliefs on other people. They must be idiots to try and force all their customers to be veggie too.

Oh My God! How stupid is it posssible for one person to be! If I couldn't get meat flavoured crisps in a pub I wouldn't think "i'll become a veggie!" I'd think "what a pub:"

How long before they realise how much trade its costing them with people going to another pub that sells pork scratchings and they reverse their decision.

Muppets, utter muppets.

Who uses isinglass when you can filter? How very 19thC.

Centrifuge then powder followed by a finishing filter.

Plenty of smaller real ale breweries.

Plus, can one guarantee beyond doubt that each and every pint of beer, lager, cider etc served by that pub is 100% isinglass free? Thought not.
