does the D50 support the Sigma 70/300?

I'd be astonished if it didn't! Unless you bought a canon fitment one

The Nikon 'F' mount dates back to 1959 and is still the same basic bayonet, although over the years various electronic contacts have emerged, eg for metering and autofocus. With regard to the DSLRs such as the D50 and D70, older lenses may not support all the features. However, any *new* lens that you buy in Nikon fitting should certainly work with any Nikon camera.
