Right there is something on ebay I would like.

It is up for £200 (starting price) with a buy it now of £275.

There are currently no bids

If I stick a bid in with a maximum of £275 what will happen?

I hae a horrid feeling that I will be bid up the maximum amount.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks

D

Doesn't buy it now often disappear when you place a bid?

I have some interest in this thread,i use ebay now and again and if i see buy it now i normaly email the seller and ask if they want to close the deal ,it has always paid off for me.
Its the bidding ime not to clear on,last night i bid on a couple of things and every time i bid i was out bid ,just like the other person had some sort of bidding machine bidding against me.

Is £275 a good price for it? Are others on eBay finishing for more? Do you need it ASAP? If so then use Buy It Now, otherwise just bid normally

That'll just be proxy bidding. i.e. if the price of something is currently £8 with £2 increments, someone could bid a maximum of £20. The price would then rise to £10. If you then bid against them at say, £12, the first bidder would automatically outbid you to £14.

As for Buy it now, it will be removed as soon as the reserve is met (IIRC). So, if there's no reserve, it will be removed on the first bid.

As has been said, it's a gamble. Bid normally if you think you can get it for less than £275. If you bid at £200 a price war could ensue and you'll end up paying more for it.

When you bid you enter the MAX you are prepared to pay. But it will only bid just above the current bid.

E.g. Current bid is displayed as £2.99 but that persons max bid is £205. (You dont know their max)
You enter a max bid of £400 (What you are prepared to pay)
Your now "winning" with a bid of £210 because the other person had said their max bid was £205.

If you had entered a max bid of £4 then they would automaically out bid you because their max is £205

It sounds like they had a higher bid than you.

ie if the item's start price is £5 and they put their first bid at £50. it will show their bidx as £5, if you bid £10 it will automatically out bid you until it reaches the other bidders maximum, in this case you wouldnt out bid the other bidder unless your bid goes over £50 clear now?

The other option is to let it finish, hope it doesn't sell, and then email and offer him £180. Depends how badly you want it.

If there is no reserve on the item, the Buy It Now is removed once the first bid goes in. If theres is a reserve the Buy It Now option goes when the reserve is met

Ah, I had this problem as well when I bought the coilovers for my Pug. I was prepared to pay the buy it now price, so bid that, expecting my first bid to be at or one increment above the starting bid amount. Not so, it went straight to the buy it now price but I didn't automatically win the bid as a buy it now. Then someone else out-bid me and I lost the auction. Very annoying!!

I did however contact the seller via e-mail and asked if he could supply me the same kit 'off e-bay', which he did for less than the buy it now price, so I was happy!

I think if you want to 'buy it now' you have to click on that button. Simply bidding the same amount isn't the same thing and will leave the auction running.

When I bought my Mustang from ebay I bid, led the auction overnight and then was then outbid the following day ... after umming and arring for a time, I decided the price was not that short of the Buy It Now price anyway and as I didn't want to lose out on the car - pressed the BIN button!

Job done.

Depends how much you want it and whether it's rare, scarce etc.

Yes exactly, I was just making that point so people weren't confused as to why I had a problem. I wanted to enter lowers bids first, as while I was happy to pay the buy it now price, I didn't want to if I had a choice. However, first bid was at the maximum I had specified.

It's this sort of crap that really pisses me off about ebay - it lies about the current bidding level, saying "current bid is £50, enter £55 or more" when the current bid is really £100 and you need to bid >£100 to get on top. Result is I tend to ignore things that don't have a "buy it now" that allows me to bypass the deliberate lies.

If you buy it, try and pay as quickly as possible, if theres one thing that pisses me off its people who don't pay (like the auction that ended on Sat and I still havn't been paid for )
