Help.

I'm trying to copy my DV video work onto DVD discs, but it wont play. I've transferred the movie onto the pc using Pinnacle 8, and copied it in MPEG2 format (as well as AVI). Both play on the pc.
I then have tried copying both onto a DVD+R (and DVD+RW), and neither play on the home DVD recorder (which is an old pioneer 717). I suspect its because its an old player. I've tried it too on a playstation 2, the small one, and that is still not playing. I given both copies to mates to try on theirs at home, and no luck.

I've also tried a DVD-R, but on my equipment, no good.

I copied it to disc with no multisessions...what ever that is.

PLEASE help.

ps - windows ME

You need to convert your MPEG-2 into .Vob format for playing on normal DVD's.

Things like Nero 6.3.0.3, ULead Movie Factory or TMPGEnc DVD Author, there are others too. Try Googling "MPEG2 to VOB" or "DVD Authoring".

Cheers Darren.

I've got NERO 6 already, but not sure which version. I've also got an upgrade disc, which i've upgraded some of the components. The good news is, i've now got a picture....but no sound. Will continue to play.

Depending on what you use, TMPGenc mostly I think tends to leave the sound off and you have to save it off seperately using VirtualDub then re-attach it using VobSub. I tend to stay away from that and use commercial packages.

Feck me.

I thought it was going to be straight forward. Havent a clue what all these vobsubs etc are.

I've added some plugins from the update disc, and i'm just trying it. With what you are saying though, probably wont work.

What are you using apart from Nero?

If you get stuck try here too - www.videohelp.com/ check out the "how to" sections on the left.

...er, nothing. All i'm using is Nero 6 (includes vision express etc..).

Think I might be getting someone in at this rate.

...added to say. When do I get the MPEG2 with the VOBs. Is it at the first stage, DV camcorder to PC (using pinnacle 8.1, or the second stage. PC to DVD disc?

AVI - conversion to MPEG2 - conversion to .Vob

DV capture from camera, edited using any number of video editing tools.

Then, conversion to MPEG2 using Cucusoft AVi to DVD.

Then take the MPEG2 streams created by Cucusoft and create the .Vob files using ULead DVD Moviefactory 2. (MF2 can convert completely from Avi to Vob and write to disc on it's own, but it cannot handle widescreen).

I've also got other tools I could use, but these above for me are fool proof.

You can see why people buy standalone digital recorders with DVD and/or hard disk, can't you? Connect the camcorder to it with a DV cable, load a blank DVD, press record on the recorder and play on the camcorder, and off you go.

Why can't someone come up with an equally easy one-stop solution for a PC equipped with a firewire card and a DVD recorder?

So far.

I've now added a few plugins from software sites/kazza lite.

Managed to copy an AVI file onto DVD+RW (using nero-DVD Video), and it plays fine on playstation, including sound. Copying an MPEG doesn't though, still no sound.

One other problem. When I put the disc in the rewriter on the pc, it wont show whats on it. I get 'This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. Create an association in the folder options in the control panel'.

Why don't you just use iMovie to import the video, create the timeline, then click the iDVD button to get it into iDVD with chapters automatically found, chose your theme then click burn.

Oh, you've got a PC. Best use about a million complicated tools and get nowhere.

Not helpful I know, but us who've seen the light do like to gloat...

Seriously though, if Apple did the complete iLife for the PC (as opposed to just iTunes) then everyones iLife (did you see what I did there) would be so much better.

You still need re-writable DVD's (DVD-RW) to be able to erase/re-write to them. Are you using normal DVD+R or DVD-R discs?

DVD+RW. I've been using/doing this all the time.

I've had to use system restore...which seems to have cured it 4 the moment.

I thought all this was going to be easy. Think i'll take up brain surgery instead. A lot easier.

Done that...but still no sound.

Had this happen to me about a year ago. Simply wasn't picking up the sound, the only way I found to cure was reinstall Nero to get back default.
