987 boxster engine noise
Discussion
i drive a 987 boxster 2.7 and ever since i got the car it has had an engine noise/rattle at 2000-2200 rpm during warm up. it has been back to the dealers several times now and had a new tail pipe and also an oil pressure switch fitted. they now say they are waiting for porsche technical to come back to them with a cause and solution.
they also say i am not the only one with this problem.
is anybody else having any problems with the 987?

Basalt 987 2.7.
I find that the engine has bit of a rattle (very very slight) up to 2000rpm and then disappears. Thats whether hot or cold.
Its back to OPC next week to try and cure some wind noise around the passenger window, so will ask then.
I thought it was maybe a case of tadts.

2 likely causes of a 987 rattle when cold. The first is a Boxster trait - the exhaust heatshields are loose and need the bolts tightened; bruised knuckles but a DIY job. The second is rarer and relates to the oil pump; I don't recall the details but you'll find them by searching the boxa.net forums.

Its a known issue. My S does it as well. Lots of posts about it on Rennteam and Boxanet. Mines been in to OPC, kept overnite and did a cold start in the morning. Just as yours 2200 rpm trailing throttle about 60 degrees water temp. Believe its a resonance in the oil pump but awaiting a fix from Porsche before they will act. Assured it's doing no harm though.
HI, just checked in here to see how many 987 Boxster owners still have this rattle. I think I was one of the first to notice it (can't miss it really) as the car did it when I drove off the forecourt on collection last January (05)!
I eventually had a new engine fitted but all that did was replace the rattle with a slightly different one. Now they tell me its the oil pump, "doing no harm" and I'm still waiting for it to be fixed.
Needless to say, I'm not a happy bunny - 12 months on and its still really loud and annoying. And how do we know its harmless? Sounds pretty alarming and once the warranty runs out...
any thoughts?? has anyone complained to Porsche GB?

my 987 2.7 also rattles from cold start up. It only gets used at the w/end and has rattled every time, only after immediately starting engine. Should I also be concearned. Also the wheel nuts are rusting, is this normal, the car is always garaged. Bugster, when Porsche diagnose the problem? could you please post any information you receive. ta

Rusting wheel nuts are standard equipment (look at new cars still in showroom)! Try asking dealer to replace them, I got new ones for free (they admitted they're not good quality).
The rattle I'm talking about only occurs when engine running, cold, at a specific rev range. I think a noisy engine when starting is just normal sometimes?

We got our Aug 05 987 Boxster about a month ago and reported hearing the rattling or fluttering noise when the engine is warming up at about 2000-2200rpm. The dealer claims to have a couple of other customers who have reported the same problem. Currently Porsche don't appear to have a recommended fix and are using some customers to test possible solutions.
I am waiting to hear back whether the other customers' cars have been sorted, then we'll get our done too.
