Installing A Mic

Hi all i have a mic for my pc that has sat about for years and i have decided to install it, i know how to install a program but how would i go about installin a mic

Er, plug it in the right hole and check that the mic volume in Windows sound recorder (or whatever its called these days) isn't set to "0"
