Is there any likleyhood of this being upgraded? for the cost of a 3 lane addition between jct 6 and 7 the current bottleneck could ease shedloads of congestion and once the Baldock bypass opens it's gonna get worse

They're working on the northern bit right now and will be upgrading all the way to Scotch Corner over the next few years.

After that they'll probably have a look at helping you southerners.

Apache - are you stalking me? I had this very conversation this morning!! I come down from St Neots to Stevenage everyday and when my Trafficmaster gives me the heads-up usually come off at J9. I was looking at the bypass site thinking when that opens God knows how much more traffic will pour/stick into the 2 lane bit. I work just by J7 and when we redeveloped our site recently we had to build back from our original boundry to let widening happen in the future. If you go to the Highways agancy site there are no plans at the moment but they have been talking about it for years now. J8 to 6 is bad enough but the section north from Welwyn is really bad now - good planning going from 3 lanes to 2 up a hill and adding the slip road at the same time, Doh.

I can't wait for an extra 10000 new residents to hit north Herts - the road is full and so are the trains. They are building like mad around my way, with places like Cambourne etc. House prices are a bit cheaper so everyone moves north but keeps working south - it took me 25 mins to get south of Sandy this morning, that is about 8 miles and all dual carridgeway.

A reply from.....

"The A1(M) is managed by the Highways Agency which is a Government body. Therefore the County Council has no control over any improvements to the route.

The Government carried out a series of "Multi Modal Studies" in the last few years - these looked at future needs for transport infrastructure. The A1(M) was covered by the London to South Midlands study - this concluded that widening of Junctions 6 to 8 was not required, but some limited works within existing highway boundaries (e.g. a crawler lane for lorries) would be appropriate. Therefore the Highways Agency do not have any plans to widen this stretch of the A1(M).

The County Council position has and continues to be that the A1(M) J6-8 needs to be widened.

Trevor Mason
Principal Engineer - Transport Policy and Monitoring"

That has just reminded me, one of the enlightened ideas was to change a lane into a bus lane like the M4 - that would be really great then, just 1 lane each way. Try a google on A1 improvements as I think that was how I found it.

I think they mean "would be far too expensive".

I used to make the journey from Royston to Stevenage every day for nearly 4yrs. I've sinced moved to Dorset and work, mainly, from home. Daily Commute <30secs.

How's the new Baldock bypass work going?

a1 needs loads doing, get rid of the roundabouts, put flyovers in, finish the upgrades that they are doing now towards scotch corner, and then how about doing something with the single lane dirt track that it becomes in scotland?
