Britain's Katherine Legge will become the first woman in more than a decade to test an F1 car this week when she gets behind the wheel of a Minardi. The Northamptonshire-born driver has been given the chance after winning three races in a successful United States' Toyota Atlantic season.

"I'm grateful to Paul Stoddart (Minardi boss) for the opportunity," said Legge.

Giovanna Amati competed in F1 in 1992, but she failed to quailify for three races and was replaced by Damon Hill.

Legge's performance in America has also landed her a Champ Car test. I think she deserves it and hope she does well

She added: "These are two of the most powerful and challenging cars to drive in the world.

"Growing up in England, it was always a goal of mine to drive a Formula One car and at the moment I am just climbing the walls to get back into a car.

"Until I prove myself some more I know that both Champ Car and Formula One are out of my reach."

Indy Racing League driver Sarah Fisher drove several demonstration laps in a McLaren at Indianapolis in 2002.

But that run was a promotional exercise for a joint sponsor and did not constitute a test

any thoughts, three race wins in Toyota Atlantic doesnt seem enough to warrant a test in an F1 car to me but I hope she is on the pace!

Bloody good on her - and it takes alot for me to say that!

Checked he acheivements out and to win in Atlantis you have to be good - but 3 in one season - bloody good.

Need to work that neck out abit though....

She was interviewed on South Today last night.

Hope she does well. It would certainly be a good thing for F1 to have a lady in it - doing well...

Well done Katherine I remember that day when we meet at Rockingham and she had that shunt.

Katherine is a much better racer than Jenson Button as history will show.

Don't think that is quite true! However well done to Katherine, Rob (her boyfriend) and Derek (her Dad)!

Well done Katherine! I'm sure she'll make the most of the test and show everyone what she can really do.
The girl's got skill, determination and balls (metaphorically speaking of course!) and I hope she goes far. Really nice and down to earth girl too.

Champ cars next year?
