Oil Consumption!?

I wonder if anyone could give me an idea of the sort of oil consumtion levels I should expect from my Chim 450? Seems to be using a little more than usual, although have done a number of longer trips recently involving a combination of: heavy traffic and fast motorway driving?

About 3500-4500 miles from full to empty on the dipstick depending on short or long journeys.
It did 1000 miles max when Hawthorns serviced it but they never mended the leaking sump - it wasn't the gasket but a split in the sump that caused the massive oil losses.

Mine drinks more if I use the higher end of the rev range, although not noticed any difference in traffic.

1 litre per 1000 miles... on average then!

Mine (95 4.0) used about half the dipstick measures in 3000 miles. Most of this was as I started to get more adventurous with my use of revs!

As said, the norm is 1 litre per 1,000 miles.

I think it is just about what it should be judging by your responses. I am going to measure it again over the next 1000 miles just to be sure.

More or less! Mine's used about a litre in the last 5,000 miles.

My 4.0 uses nothing like that amount of oil. I've never had to top it up between services

4 litre's are generally the best on oil, and 5's the worst, as it's an overbore.. and not a particularly good one...

1lt in about 2000 miles with new liners approx 4500miles ago, on a 98 blue! 5l, and that's with some high revving driving. How can there be so much difference? Can we have some figures with different oil types please, I want to try and make some sense of this! Thanks guys.

Ever check it?

I guess there are always variances...my experience is that the 4.0, 4.5 & 5.0 all use the same. (based on several different cars over 10 years & 250,000 miles)

I check it every few weeks, and it just doesn't go down. It usually stays reasonably clear as well, getting murky brown towards the end of the service interval.

Hi All,

Ive A Chim 450 and using Mobil 1 0/40 oil (which i think is slightly thinner than rain water ) mine didnt use any oil in 4500 miles.

Am i a record breaker now?
