What size can you get away with...

I am looking at sorting out the Cerbie's speaker system, and, although I am happy to do minor DIY, I am really not into major surgery.

So what size of speakers could I fit?

I'm not with the car, and I seem to recall that the standard ones are 10cm/4" front and rear?

It also looks like you couldn't increase the rears without major surgery. The fronts look like some minor cutting of the door insert would allow something bigger.

Anyone done MINOR upgrades? I am a numpty DIYer! :hehe:

The fronts are 61/2". Just fitted some focal components in their place. Got them half price fron Australia.

The max size you can fit in between the rear seats, is a 10" sub. Pic on profile.

I upgraded the stereo soon after I got my car because the sound was so bad - I now have a Pioneer headset with 50W per channel and Infinity Reference speakers in the front. The headset has an iPod interface and telephone capability via bluetooth.

The speakers have a separate flush mount tweeter that lifts the sound but does not sound overly bright. I have not bothered changing the rear speakers.

My road angel has been hard wired too with the GPS antena hidden under the dash just above the headset.

When I get home I'll take a couple of photos of the installation and post them - will be the middle of next week before I'm back.

I had a look last night, and the front speakers in mine aren't anything as big as 6.5"! cue size related innuendo!

Clearly I ought to be able to replace my diddy ones with something with a bit more oomph...

My car was a 1997 model with 6 1/2" fronts and 4" rears - I thought that was the standard.

Small hijack - is the radio reception on anyones cerb good enough to allow the use of a radio type ipod connector?

The focals (polyglass 165v2) have vastly improved the sound quality. They retail over here for £240ish, so I was expecting them to be good. When I saw a pair on ebay in Australia, brand new for £100 + £20 pp, I didn't have any hesitation. (These were even popping up on ebay for £160ish second hand). As for ampimg. I've got a genesis profile 4 amp in the boot. The focals and the sub run off it.

Onr thing to bear in mind, you have to have them loud, so as to overcome the exhausts, which at the end of the day, is the best soundtrack. Its good to have both options. Music or exhausts.

Not on mine, I seem to get far too much interference. I don't find my iPod transmitter much good really (not an official iTrip but similar), it's always hissy (even my wife's Seat Leon). Even after doing a static "in car survey", I managed to find a frequency to run it on with bearable reception but 10 mins down the road it always seems to overlap with another radio station.

I have a Monster transmitter cable I bought in the US and it works okay but hard wiring is the way to go. Perfect sound quailty and you can control it from the headset.

I use the road-trip style rather than the itrip for my mini ipod. It docks into it and recharges it at the same time. The arm is just about long enough to plug into the cigarette lighter socket. I don't have any buzzing at all. I just change the frequency if I get any interference.

Where did you fit the second speaker, kojak? Next to the larger, or did you find a cunning spot for it?

I've got a pair of 10" subs and an amp in/on a bass box in the boot of my Cerb. No cutting no messing. The sound is awsome, and it can be removed if i need the space.

Hi.

Sorry for the delay. Been in Dublin getting wrecked on Guinness for 4 days.

I've put the tweeter in a position that if I removed the speakers, I wouldn't have a hole in the leather. It also is positions so it faces towards the the inside of the car, rather than into the footwell.

If you are wondering where the crossover is, its pushed behind the panel thats on the bottom left of the photo. A tight squeeze, but it stops it rattling.
