Folks,

I have about 20k to invest, currently I'm thinking of sticking part of it in a 4-5% Saving's account and the rest in a ISA...has anyone got any other ideas, I'm not really into the whole stockmarket thing, I'd just like to see some return on my 20K and don't mind investing some of it up for a longer term.

I was thinking may be another property, or even a commercial property.....

Any ideas would be great folks thanks.........

PS I'm already paying 40% tax, so the less I give to ole Gordon B the better!!!

thanks

for starters you can obviously put 3k a yr into an cash isa 3k into 'shares' isa and a grand into a life assurance type thing.

if it's just shortish term there are worse places than an ING / egg type account imo

If you have a mortgage then offsetting that or paying a bit off can be a good investment

I guess in the long term chucking it into a SIPP would mean that you'd get 40% tax relief back on that? Then you could choose whichever funds/investment suits you?

RBS(?) or maybe Scottish Widows were doing some 7% accounts the other day. Leaflet is in your local TSB/lloyds.

That would be my advice - and the rules change in April to allow more investment options.

Leverage it on some commercial or residential properties in a depressed market. Something with a cash flow and potential for appreciation. Nothing like bricks and mortar.

Yes - but you can only access 25% of the capaital with a pension as the rest has to be annuitised - so only really works if you live a LONG time after you retire. Investing in other assets means you can at least get back the capital.

If I were you I'd buy a decent, readable financial paper, say Moneyweek or some such, get it and read it every week for say 4 months to get an idea of what different products there are, the pros and cons etc. Then make an informed decision.

Maybe even see an IFA, but do so from a positon of having at least some idea.

HSBC are offering 8% annually (have to keep the cash in all eyar though). Thats probably the best return around at the moment surely?

Otherwise I'd agree and say premium bonds too...

It'll take him over 6 years to pay £20k into that one I'm afraid.

A few acres. Near the Kennedy Space Center a while ago, there was a few hundred (or was it thousand?) acres for sale - about $5 an acre!!! (not much you could do with it though.)
