You have two choices...

1.) Buy Wireless ADSL Router/Modem
2.) Buy Wireless access point...

1.) is a much tidier 1 box solution and means that the wireless laptop can be used without your machine being turned on...

2.) could be a cheaper solution utilising Internet Connection Sharing on your machine, but this means that your machine needs to be turned on whenever internet access is required upstairs..

I presume at present you have a USB ADSL Modem, my recommendation would be to purchase option 1 and put your ADSL modem in storage, just in case of failures.

All major manufacturers make the hardware that is required, and most sell through the likes of PC World...

Go for Slinky's Option 1 with either a Linksys or NetGear router.

SOmething like this ought to do it:- www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=278&osCsid=b12387f7ad888607916d3ac43996215b

I use a Netgear wireless unit here and have never had any probs. Don't forget that the laptop will need to be wireless enabled too. It may already have a card built into it, however the extra USB one on the above link will work fine.

Then, you need to connect your pc to the new wireless router too, and you can either order an extra USB card, or use a standard network cable if you have the correct socket on the back of your PC (it looks rather like a slightly larger modem socket).
