When accelerating hard at low speeds, my 2001 Grand Cherokee sticks in 1st gear and will only change up if I lift off the throttle then re-apply. Anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

It's supposed to hold the gear longer when you floor it. Are you sure you are waiting long enough? You probably need to be past its max torque revs.

Definitely not just normal operation - it stays in 1st gear and will bounce off the rev limiter until I lift off, at which point it changes up to 2nd

It may just be the kickdown cable is incorrectly adjusted.

Or a brake band is to be replaced (like in it being worn), or adjustment of it if possible. Worst would be the automatic gearbox control system. You can have it checked at companies specialized in automatic gearboxes, especially those specialised in the type you have.

Or a vacuum fault.

As it changes up the bands and clutches work.

May also be a governor.
