Mad American comedienne Joan Rivers and equally wacko Darcus Howe were on the Midweek programme on Radio 4 yesterday. What ensued was a huge row when Joan thought that Darcus had accused her of being a racist. I think it was a mix up caused by language (although Howe is prone to be sanctimonious) but it kicked off big time. Best thing I've heard on the Radio in ages.

If you want to hear it;

Click on "Listen to the most recent midweek" and shuffle forward to about 22 mins 50 sec.

Thanks for the heads-up - nice one!

Shame they didn't let in run on a bit more!

Heard it live yesterday "as it happened". A bit of a shock to the system for us, normally placid, Radio 4 listeners.

I think I sided with Mrs Rivers - and when Libby Purves was interviewed about on the news later that evening, I think you could sense that she did too.

I listened to it live too. I think Darcus Howe has got away with murder for too long. He threw his barbed comment at her after she pointed out that 'tribal wars' were not just a black/white thing but happened between all white and all black communities too. He's used to getting away with that kind of putdown because it's fashionable for white people to wear the hair shirt over all race issues. It's stupid - paints all black people as victims and builds barriers between communities.

Picked the wrong one with Joany though, didn't he?

Did you notice that after the spat, she got on with the show, but he never spoke again? Not even to say goodbye. I think he took his teddy and went home...

Saying that, I thought he was good when he did 'Devil's Advocate', but that was about 20 years ago now.

Heh, the way she said 'SOAB' at the end was hysterical. Good on her for not standing for the slur.

Top spleen vent that was. I agree with what she said too.

Must admit I can't stand the man nowadays. Things have moved on since he started his career, and his approach to race relations does more to create tension than to engender openness. He certainly came across as someone who's not used to being questioned. I suspect he makes a nice living out of it though

Yes, it's good. Sumbitch.

That guy Darcus Howe riles me, he doesn't have a chip on his shoulder, he has a chip shop.

He also has the balls to blame on it on her as part of her book promotion.

He's a journalist/philosopher. He's got an incredible brain and I used to really admire him for his ability to analyse. But everything I've heard recently has been mealy-mouthed and self-indulgent. A couple of websites here:

Deakus completely misunderstood Rivers and accused her of racism. She, quite rightly, opened up at close range and he, quite deservedly, got his.

I'm going to listen to it again.

You need RealPlayer to get 'listen again' from the BBC. I can record the bit if you want and mail it.

In essence, Darcus was promoting his new Channel 4 film and he said something about being persecuted by his (white) ex-wife. Joan said he was unfair because he was making his children choose between their black heritage and their white heritage. He obviously didn't like this because he later dropped in the line 'because black offends Joan'. She didn't just pick him up, she went off on one big style.

Not a funny subject, but a very funny exchange.

She should have been thrown off the show. Taking photos of plants without their permission - worse than the paparazzi.
