The Gibraltar thread got me thinking: if the Falklands were invaded again today, what would we do about it?

Bugger all.

El Tony would announce that he had achieved one of his great peace victories by simply giving the Islands to Argentina in exchange for a free hoilday at the presidents villa.

Total blockade, no way they're getting in or out of Portsmouth until we say so.

Me? I'd probably take a notional interest in it but I don't think I'd, metaphorically, break my stride.

Next year would be a good year to invade the Falklands. No fighter capability on board the Royal Navy carriers by next year due to the Sea Harriers being withdrawn from use. I hope no one's told the Argies.

There are still some Tornados floating around down there though aren't there?

Yes, they have a small contingent based there (three or four aircraft) at RAF Mount Pleasant. The airfield was built after 1982 to provide permanent airvborne defence capabilities. Whther three or four Tornado F3s is sufficient is a moot point.

Thought they only had two?

Wouldn't the Argies capture them anyway?

Should offer to sell it back to them or better to the US , it's not that much use anyway is it?

If the Argentinians weren't a bunch of military incompetants they could have taken it the first time easily.

The RAF MoD site states that a flight of four Totnados are kept there. I'm sure that's not a fixed numnber though and it might vary somewhat due to serviceability and other commitments etc.

I have heard rumours of huge under sea oil reverves in the region so it would be of use

Do you mind if I throw a spanner in the works and go a little off topic? Outside of the Northern Ireland debate, why is it that these out post colonies are defended and protected so vehemently? It's not tolerated when a modern nation invades another, and yet the British Empire insists on retaining hers? Is there not some small ammount of hypocrisy there somewhere?

I have to go out for a while but would be interested in any replies.

I doubt that.

I would put money on the fact that we would go to war to recover them.

What colonies? There aren't any left.

Everybody who lives in the Falklands wants to be governed by Britain. Are you suggesting that it would be right to ride roughshod over their wishes and allow the Argentinians to walk in and take over?

How would you feel if the French invaded the Channel Islands or the Spanish invaded the Isle of Wight?

It's debateable whether places like the Falklands were "invaded" by the British in the accepted sense of the word. In some respects, you could criticise ALL European countries who maintained colonies all around the world for such behaviour.

I think it is very useful for countries to have these little "islands" of colonialism scattered around the place. Most of the imporatnt places have long since reverted to self-governenance - for good or ill.

Should France give back its islands in the Pacific or French Guiana?

Should Spain hand back Cueta (in Morocco)?

Should the US hand back the US Virgin Islands?

It's not just Britain.

It is a question of self determination.

The inhabitants of the Falkland Islands wish to remain British.

To my knowledge Argentina has never controlled these islands, and has no valid claim on them whatsoever.

Maybe something to do with the fact that the only ones we defend these days are the ones that want us to; we're just respecting their choice.

As far as the Falklands go...what a sick joke about our carriers. New Labia defence budget cutting trs.
