"Crunch" on change-up
Discussion
Hi, I have a GTO3 with the five speed box and have started to notice that if I am accelerating hard when I change from second to third there is a distinct "crunch". Under normal driving it's fine and if, when accelerating hard, the revs are below still 4500 when I change up it's also fine.
It's a failry low mileage vehicle and is driven carefully.
Is this likely to be a synchro issue? Anyone know if it's fixable? Thanks for any advice.

It can to the linkage that just needs tinkering with. I have noticed my gearchange getting a little less slotty (6 speed) since I have had it, and mine is actually at the factory today having the linkage tinkered with ready for me to collect tomorrow!
Yes, I am collecting her tomorrow

It will either be an incorrectly adjusted linkage or third gear synchro is beginning to fail - this isn't unusual on the 5SP box if used in anger. A drain of gearbox oil and examination for synchro shrapnel will confirm/rule out this.

If required we have a couple of brand new 5SP boxes in stock.

Is a synchro failure something that can be repaired or is it a new gearbox? How much would a 5sp box with fitting be? Thanks.
A synchro failiure can be repaired without problem, however the labour involved in a gearbox rebuild means it would be cheaper to simply replace the gearbox with a new one.
Also synchro failiure can lead to debris in the gearbox oil which can cause rapid wear on other components within the box - is your diff whining?
I have sent you an e-mail with some details but we would re-set the gearchange cables, check the linkage condition and change the gearbox oil first before recomending a box replacement.

And if you repair it or replace it with another 5 speed box it'll happen again. 7.2k for a 6 speed box upgrade and linkage.
A box rated at 350lbft max sold in a car with 350lbft, clever....
Did I read that right? £7200 for a 6 speed box
- I could just replace my 5 speed box 5 times for that!£7.2k for a six-speed 'box conversion? Rubbish!
To upgrade a five-speed equipped car with a six-speed 'box and ATB diff is £4565 + VAT. To install a new five-speed box (but with the addition of an ATB diff) is £2250 + VAT.
Bear in mind that both the above prices include the 22 hours labour involved in removing and re-installing the engine/gearbox.
As I've already mentioned to Sidney in an e-mail, we would be happy to check his car first to see whether the fault can be rectified without going to this extreme.

If it is rubbish then it is your rubbish
Read my post again - "6 speed box and <b>linkage</b>", then refer to your own post here: www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=189516&f=26&h=0&hw=linkage
Where you say it'll be £7.2k for the 6 speed box and new linkage.
if you go on ebay search for noble there are 5 speed gearboxes for the buy it now price of £199 says rrp is £828 + £200 surcharge....think you could get it fitted for under a grand not as nice a job as the £7200 but can think of better things to spend 6 grand on and your car wont be worth any more! just a sugestion

Just had a search for these and they are Mondeo spec - they require various modifications to make them suitable for the Noble.

Nathan old chap, since you sold your M12 and left the Nobility there's been a distinct sourness to your postings, almost as if you're listening in just to give a dig when you can.
You can't wallow in the past forever. There come's a time to move on old boy.
