Ive recently moved in to halls at uni. Now, its not too grotty as halls go, and my room is clean (if not tidy), but i keep finding little bugs hiding under things, like shoes. Ive never seen them before, they are about 10mm long and a couple of mm wide, shiny silver, and have a tail like that of a shrimp. Any ideas as to the identity of my new found friends?

Most bugs used these days (other than those used by the security services which operate in a different way anyway) use FM. The simplest way to find them is to use a small FM radio and move around the room going up and down the wavelengths, until you get a load of feedback, Then just home in as the feedback gets stronger. Locate the bug and destroy it.

Does this work if the device isn’t broadcasting or records data instead of transmitting it?
