Scotch Scottish, insulting or not?
Discussion
You live and learn. I was down in London this weekend and I saw a Scottish shop called "The Scotch shop" Hang about, I thought Scotch was a huge insult to the Scottish.
My curiosity got the better of me so we went inside and had a natter with the proprietor. According to him, it's just a bit of snobbery and most Scots don't mind.
And the reason it's called the scotch shop, he had the letters kicking around from a previous venture and "They're bloody expensive you know" :hehe: (sic)
So who else thought Scotch was an insult?

It's not an insult (not to me anyway), but it's not correct either.
Scotch is whisky, and nothing else (oh, and a junction in Yorkshire but that's ok...)
For everything else, the correct adjective is Scots or Scottish, used in the same context as you would use English or Irish.

I think more Americans than Sassenachs call Sweatys "Scotch".
It's hardly insulting though is it? Perhaps if you call a Scotsman a caber-tossing scotch c
t it's different.
And for you trivia fans there is more than one Scotch Corner. There's the obvious one "oop north" and there's one in Knightsbridge.

Years ago I presenting when one of our American clients leant over to one of my consultants (from Yorkshire and a full-time alcoholic) and asked him if he was Scotch. I interupted with - yep, about 60% at the moment.
Went down like a lead balloon - about as well as a team building exercise where when asked "what film inspired me the most?", replied with "two-into-one will go"

I tend to hear "Scotch" either from people who ared oing it deliberately to insult me/wind me up (mainly work colleagues calling me Scotch Egg) or from people who don't know any better (Yanks).
It doesn't bother me any more than people saying "Edinburrow" or "Lisestershire", its just a bit unusual.
