Portsmouth to Caen
Discussion
I am looking for Ferry prices for next june. I am looking at either Portsmouth, plymouth or poole over to france and was wondering where is best to book?
I know its cheaper to go dover but for many reasons we want to go from the above ports.
Could anyone give me any links to reputable companies that I can get these prices from
regards

there's a fast catamaran and a big slow ferry on that route, depending on the time of day. i took the cat in august this year, it doesn't take too long. recommended (and you can do a bit of d-day sites tourism too if you've time)
edit: oops, i mean portsmouth cherbourg - it's shorter

Just checked the Cherbourg route (sorry, not Caen).
Fast boat each way: Thursday morning 08:00 returning Monday lunchtime 12:45, car plus 2 = 247 of your Breeteesh pounds.
Anyone know how long the drive is from Cherbourg/Caen to LM? (or for that matter Dieppe-LM?)
Ive got 3 crossing routes lined up and not sure which is going to tbe the best time/distance/petrol etc. for me.
My choices are:
Dover Boulogne with the TVRCC (by far the cheapest crossing)
Newhaven Dieppe (my nearest route) as Billy No Mates (and pick a tow up the other side)
Portsmouth Caen/Cherbourg with numerous PHers
Not having been before, Im trying to work out the best way there and back

I've already booked Portsmouth to Caen with Brittany Ferries. Going out on the Friday morning fast crossing and coming back on the Sunday night slow boat. I have booked a cabin on the way back so as to get a shower and some sleep, as a i don't expect any whilst i am there.
The cost is £320.
It is booked for the weekend of the 17th June, but don't forget the dates haven't been confirmed yet.

There is usually plenty of traffic on the roads and I've tried most of the crossings.
Cherbourg - LM is around 200 miles and takes around 3-4 hours. The first 70 or so miles are on speedy dual carriageway. Crossing takes about 2:30 on the fastcat.
Caen - LM is around 110 miles and takes 2-3 hours. Crossing takes about 6hrs on the ferry. There is a fastcat service but I haven't tried this.
Dover - LM is more like 260 miles and takes a good 5-6 hours (one of those is getting lost in Rouen!!)

Thanks for that, giving me something to think about.
I took the family to France for a few days earlier this year and was stupid enough to do a day trip to Rouen, so I know what you mean. I use the term 'day trip' sparingly, as I drove in, got lost for an hour or so, and drove out again very frustrated. Not a destination of choice!

Portsmouth-Caen is run by Brittany Ferries so try their website. That route cost me £228 per car or £118 for bikes, this June. It does depend on which day/time you go, though.
Same route cost me £232 this year. Outbound was Tues evening and homebound, Sunday evening. Booked it online in Nov 04.
Having done the slog down from Calais twice, this route is much more relaxed. And you've got time to have a jar or two and get a bit of kip either way. The drive from Caen to the circuit is better as well IMO, some good little cafes to stop off at for a spot of early morning brekkie!
Matt,
Just checked out the Brittany site and it looks like the earliest crossing on the 14th is at 3:15pm landing at Caen at 10pm! All ealier slots are booked
Price was £227 returning on the 19th. Looks like ferries are getting booked up fast
Any more suggestions guys? We're planning on departing on Wednesday 14th and returning on Monday 19th.

Been on the Condor fast ferry from Poole to St Malo a few years now and its pretty good, especially the other end as St Malo to Le Mans is not a busy route and weve only ever seen 1 speed trap in the last 5 years....They have 2 morning crossings which will comfortably get you to the campsite before dark.
As everyone seems to be ignoring it, I'll give a vote for Portsmouth - Le Harve.
P&O are (have?) dropped the route, but has been taken over by LD Lines.
For either Le Mans, or the Le Mans Classic the following month you are looking at £200 round trip, including a cabin (so driver AND passengers can have "a few" beers in the bar before getting a good nights sleep and waking fresh for the new days driving).
Departure is 11pm, arriving in Le Havre around 8am and leaving you a great back road (but fast) route down to Le Mans.
LD don't seem to have their own web site, so any of the ticket agencies a google for "portsmouth le havre car ferry" will see you right.
