Wireless network at home
Discussion
OK, I'm a real novice here. Need help on what wireless connectivity can offer me.
I've got the desktop PC and new laptop.
Installed the Wireless DSL router and signal booster. Laptop has wireless built in.
How do I get the best out of the connectivity?
Can I use the apps on my desktop PC on the Laptop?

You can't run applications from another machine realistically as the connection isn't fast enough. I tried running a few games installed on another machine over a wifi network and it takes AGES to load.
You could use a remote desktop tool to run programs on a remote machine and manipulate them through the other machines desktop.

I am taking it you have acquired an 802.11g wireless solution?
If so, you can take full remote control of either machine over the wireless network absolutely fine.
You say you want to do more, what is it you want to do?
You have the infrastucture that will power just about anything (short of media heavy applications), so, follow your dreams, you too can achieve your goals.

Yes, they originally sold me a ADSL router, but I'm on Telewest Broadband, so just swapped it for a DSL router.
Lynksys WRT54G which is 802.11g.

If both machines are running XP Pro search the help for something called Remote Desktop Connection
If they arent both running XP then www.realvnc.com is what you want.
Alternatively if the desktop is running XP pro you can downloand the Remote Desktop Connection client for any flavour of Windows

Ok here we go.
Went out at lunchtime yesterday and changed the ADSL router for a DSL router. Got home looked at the PC scratched my head realising I had no Ethernet port in my PC. It's 7.50pm and PC World is five miles away. Drove like the wind, a spikey hair oik was just about to close the door... NOOOOOOOO
He must have seen the distress on my face and said if I'm quick carry on
Found the relevent Networking card and returned home. Back off the PC , installed the card into a spare slot and installed the driver software.... nothing, no IP address shown
Spoke to a help line (£1.50 per minute
). After 10 minutes he summises I have the wrong type of Network Card
No ... surely not. Back off the PC again, removed the card and installed it in a different spare slot.
Plugged the router and modem in... Hey Presto it works.
Halleluya I'M WIRELESS
wahooo !
Tested the signal all over the house (including traps 1&2) and it's is mega fast (shows excellent)
Looked at the time 12.30am
, got to get up in 4 hours
but it looks worth the hassle.
One last question.
I can connect to the internet and email on my Laptop now (wirelessly) but how do I transfer large files between desktop and laptop. Looked on Networking and explorer, but couldn't see the other machine?

If they are both in a workgroup (right click My COmputer, select properties, click on the computer name tab), then run the Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel, which should enable sharing, and publish a few bits.
Other than that, create a folder where you have loads of space, called transit or suchlike, then, IN Windows Explorer, right click the folder, and choose sharing and security, then go through that.
If laptop is a work one, then you MAY have additional restrictions on it.

Also depending on OS its worth checking to see if any software firewalls are enabled as that will stop you seeing and working with the other machines on the network.

Works a treat. Renamed PC's to LAPTOP and DESKTOP. Called the Network group STU. I can now see eithers 'shared files'.
How can I direct my Laptop's explorer to see a specific folder on my desktop PC?
You need to map a drive, give me a bell in the office or even tonight and ill sort it for you.
