What racing series
Discussion
Hi
Me and a mate would like to start a racing series - fancy the ideas of minis.
Looking round the web there seems to be loads of different series etc and I have no idea where to start. We would be fairly new to the game - I have done a few trackdays in my caterham (dont really want to race that though).
We were also looking for something where maybe both of us could compete in different races at the same venue - i.e. two drivers but only one car !!
Would love to hear if anyone else has been through this or any recommendations people have
As this is our first go we would like something that is fun and cheap - but we can build on to hopefully get better and more competative.
Any help would be much appreciated
Jas

the mighty mini championship is quite friendly and the cars are evenly matched. all using the Rover 1.3 coopers. modifications are very limited to keep things close and only a few seconds covers the entire grid. i would estimate £5000 for the car, the preperation etc and as it is a national series the associated costs will be quite high. Not much use if you want to race with a co-driver though.
Something i looked into was the top hat series. They havea number of one hour two driver races and some historic stuff can be picked up quite cheap although how much you modify it is up to you (all within regulations of course) Things like Anglias, Austin A35s and Cortina GTs are quite cheap and the atmosphere in the paddock was great, the drivers were all very friendly and they were very respectful (for racing drivers!) on the track.

Existing Caterham, twoferone opportunity?
Seriously, you should consider the Caterham Owners Speed Championship, at least as an interim while you wrap your head around how you would want to go circuit racing.
- Cheap
- Friendly and helpful bunch
- All running the same basic car (err, obviously), so there's advice, experience, and a fair chance of get-you-home parts in the worst eventuality.
- A good calendar with a wide range of venues, whether you're looking to build wide experience or stay close to home.

Also see here.
Not too much on shared drives, but some decent ideas none the less.
Also, you could do a single driver series and split the drives, with one of you spannering whilst the other drives one weekend, then swap the next.
Make sure you sort out how you cover damage bills before you get into anything like this btw!

Minicross is the answer mate.
I raced in it from '92 to '03, twice winning the "Shared Car Award".
You get to have a go at all sorts of racing - circuit, rallycross, hillclimbs, sprints (we used to do grasstrack but that died off a few years back).
Best of all you can share a car (and costs...) as all events run a number of heats you simply drive back to the pits, swap drivers and off you go again.
Car takes a bit of a pounding and you need to make sure the cooling is spot on as it runs twice as much as the single driver cars with little time for recuperation in between runs / races.
