Buying a car for the kids

Right, it's that time of year again. Christmas present lists have been written and a car seems to feature rather prominently on my daughters lists.
Soo, being a petrolhead dad, I'm thinking of getting them one. Now they saw one in Toys R Us for £250, but it was a bit plasticy..... I'm sure being petrolheads we can come up with something much better :D
Anyone got any suggestions? It needs to be quite robust, have two seats and not be too fast :driving:

ahaha - i see this has already degenerated into a classic PH " these are my requirements, what car shall I get?" thread, with me suggesting totally unsuitable vehicles.

One of my friends has just finished building a Westfield with a 1.1 engine in it - and plans to get a 2l in it in due course when the insurance is reasonable.
Only downside with this is that he did have to build it, from scratch, himself; but if you've got the time it could be a fun winter project.

Err, the girls in question are six and seven years old... Not sure I want to let them loose in a Westy just yet

Can you get a rolling Westy chassis fit a couple of seats and rig up a pedal drive.... Talk about ultimate kids gokart! Plus as they get older you can fit more and more to it until in 10 years time you have a full car....

My kids have one of these;
'Gaucho' by Peg Perego a 12v Jeep 2 seater, It has 2 speeds and reverse 2.5mph & 5mph (2.5 in reverse) they are quite tough and ours stands up to an awful lot of abuse but still it keeps working, although I did need to replace the Battery (used a Car battery instead of the original 2x6v expensive one and it lasts much longer now).
It has 2 motors/2 wheel drive and will work on wet grass, even on an incline - many don't as they only have 1 motor/1 wheel drive (such as the small 6v electric 'Quad' we also have which is crap and best suited to hard surfaces or flat, short, dry grass).
