Kit car insurance question
Discussion
Maybe this should be in the kit car section, but lets have a go here.
I'm thinking about next year when I'm 17 and get a car. Now obviously everyone wants to be different and I'm no exception but I don't have the funds to be different the expensive way. Basically, I've been thinking along the lines of a kit car, but am not sure about insurance. I know 'older' people (and by that I mean over 30) seem to get insurance for kit cars extremely cheaply, but someone the other day just laughed and said I'd never be able to get insurance for any kit car at the age of 17. Has anyone ever tried to get insurance for a 17-18 yr old driving a kit car? And who are the best car insurers - specialists, clubs or main brokers (like Adrian Flux)?

I thought you were going to get a bigger (proper) bike?
Yeh, but I need a car as well for when its raining, or when I go to school (suit and bike don't generally mix too well), and moving things around when I go to Uni. I got wet today on my bike anyway, and I didn't even have windscreen wipers
so a car would be useful (don't care that much about what I get though, as insurance in the most important (and scary) thing. pwig said:

@ 19! LOL fantastic!
I understand why they are referred to as 'Automotive coffins' now![]()
How much did the car set you back?
Yeh pwig, how much was the car and what engine size? (the pic on your profile doesn't seem to be working, or maybe the little red 'X' is over exposed a bit
)Ok, everytime someone asks about this I suggest Herts Insurance Consultants (HIC) they do classic cars (see magazines) but they also have a kit car section, which you should ask for when you phone them. When I used them (three years ago now) they always did their best to provide the lowest quote and succeeded everytime. Generally speaking kit car insurance will be cheaper. the best thing to do is pick an example car and phone round some places to get an idea of the cost.
Now you will be asking about which car to go for! HTH

You used to be able to insure any Quantum (so, say for sake of argument a 330hp extreme) for £400ish fully comp via Quantum's scheme. But I wouldn't - despite being assured repeatedly that it was valid for the duration I owned the car, this premium suddenly vanished for me when I came to renew it!!
Anyway, bitter rant over, as an example, I'm insuring my heavily modified Quantum 2+2 in my name, as the only driver, with no NCB at 22 for £300pa fully comp. admitedly I'm a bit older, but I know someone with a Quantum Coupe who's insured at 17 for not much more than I'm paying. Both are Footman James.
A random note on kit car insurance - I don't know if this applies to other companys - but I believe FJ rate the cars purely on capacity. Obviously a loading applied for the driver, but for any given individual a 1000cc car would attract the same premium, whether it was in a stripped out road-racer or in a two-ton behemoth barely capable of moving its own weight. Gives you something to consider. That said, this doesn't apply to bike engines.... I checked :-)
Oh yeah - final thing, don't underestimate the value of club insurance deals!
