Being Dutch I am not familiar with the UK situation with respect to speedcamera's etc.
But since the 'lichtschranke', which BTW is not very often used in our country, the government taxcollectors have found a new money tree:
'traject control'.
It works with two sets of digital camera's above each lane. One at the start of a particular roadsection and one at the end of that section. A picture of each car is taken at the beginning and at the end of that roadsection. The difference in time is noted and with the given distance one's average speed is calculated.
And yes you've guessed right: when your average speed exceeds that maximum speed at that section you will automatically receive your speeding ticket. All fully automated. To ensure that no reading errors are made all dutch numberplates have mandatory been modified.

oh never fear, we have those here too. Specs digital cameras I think they are called. It does mean you can test your quarter mile drag race times if you remember to park up before the 2nd camera
