I think it's fantastic - men generally don't like shopping so we can get away with throwing on a suit; it's fairly obvious what to wear. Women enjoy dressing up and buying new dresses (generally) and we get to reap the benefits of lovely ladies looking, well, lovely!

Cheers,
Rob.

Newsreaders are all lying propaganda scumbags, so you might as well have something nice to look at

I think it works as young female presenter as eye candy for a certain demographic (no prizes for guessing that one...) and the older male as respectful traditional authority figure who you can 'trust' to tell you the truth (yeah right...). Kinda obvious really, all a brainwashing plot, like giving a bitter pill a coat of sugar so it goes down well...

As for suits, its mainly a western thing, take a look at some other cultures, for a start there are kilts, or maybe traditional arab dress, perhaps sir would like a grass skirt and some fancy body pain... or any number of weird and stupid national costumes, like those that world leaders are forced to wear at various conferences, much to the delight of comedians everywhere. Anyway women don't take too kindly to men stealing all their limelight.

I suppose if you want to go into an actual theory then mine would be that men are traditionally the ones who pick up women rather than the other way around. Therefore why would the man need to look flamboyant? He is the one doing the hunting, and the woman is the one trying to attract attention, therefore she needs to 'standout' and appear more attractive so that she is more likely to be picked.

Interestingly gay men are generally regarded as more flamboyant in dress, or at least some of them (dare I say the more feminine ones) so maybe my theory has some merit (then again maybe not).

Basically I think it boils down to the fact that men in suits are regarded as authoratative and old equals wise. When it comes to women, they are often regarded as sexual objects (nothing new or profound there) and I think that people just enjoy looking at attractive women - and of course, less clothes the better from the fellas' point of view. The older female news casters are all very attractive and sexy (Moira Stuart, Angela Rippon.)

That's OK if you like wearing suits. I hate wearing suits, and I have a deep and furious loathing for having some pointless length of rag tight around my neck, so I think it sucks.

In fact, that's one of the things I'm going to do when I get my time machine working - go back and strangle whoever invented the tie with his own stupid invention before he has a chance to show it to anyone.

Some of the Latino, Spanish speaking networks over here have younger men and women newscasters, and the women wear much more revealing attire--Tighter shirts, lower necklines---something you'd wear on a date rather than to work, in my opinion. Everyone wears a ridiculous amount of make up and they have that perfect hair that reminds me of the old Duracel battery ads (plastic people powered by batteries).

I wish they would try to be less trendy. It's bad enough that they try to sell the story so much, and having them dress trendy and try to be hip just makes them less credible.

And then there's John Stewart of the Daily Show, who's perfect.

Some times the local newscasters in Hawaii wear aloha shirts, which I think is pretty amusing.

Male newscasters once hired tend to have great longevity in the business. Female newscasters have it much harder as when thier looks go sometimes so do they.

It's a very unfair part of that business.

I'm not so sure about that. Female newsreaders sometimes drop out for the usual reasons females withdraw from the workplace - marriage, babies etc. However, many of the original batch of female newsreaders are still plying their trade - Anna Ford, Moira Stewart etc. A copuple no longer read the news that much but are still very active in the media.

The influx of women into newreading has boomed in the last 5 to 10 years and there must be almost a 50:50 split now betwen male and female.

Er, carry on watching of course! Not enough male totty as there is on telly although the Blue Peter presenter, Gethin Jones, is rather tasty.

However, I thought the chest waxing episode was a bit OTT.

Afterall, there's nowt wrong with a hairy chested, tanned young man!

Decisions...decisions...

Fit young newsreader with bulging biceps and spiky hair, Blue Peter hairy-chested eye candy or strong-thighed, manly rugger buggers...

Gazboy, I'm spoilt for choice.

I think I need to go and lie down.
