[big]Man jailed for fake Rolex watch [/big]
A Belgian man has been jailed for six months for wearing a fake Rolex .
A court in Dendermonde heard that the man, named only as Gunther R, 33, had been spotted by representatives of Rolex wearing the fake watch and they complained to authorities.
The judge ruled the man had knowingly bought the fake and sentenced him to six months in prison under laws for handling counterfeit goods.
He was also ordered to pay a £700 fine for breaching brand name registration laws.

Europe seems to be clamping down big style on this kind of thing, saw a programme on TV few months ago filmed in Italy where at border controls they have specialist teams confiscating(sp) and destroying conterfiet goods (....Prada, YSL etc even if they were purchased elsewhere years ago)
One small point, cant have been that good a copy if they could spot it from a casual glance from a distance!

We sell Cisco and only original Cisco we buy direct so we know we are clean , but we were raided by the police along with several Cisco reps including a little Chinese Guy who was expert in spotting the fake stuff , we passed with flying colours but there is soooo much fake Cisco and other computer branded hardware on the market its untrue
The company I work for has been making china (tableware) for over 250 years (and is still run by the founding families). The bane of our lives is cheap rip offs coming out of the Far East (especially China). They contribute nothing to the design but trade off our reputation like leeches - if we leave samples with customers out there they can have (poor) copies made in a week. We now persue all manufacturers and distributors of these fakes very aggressively. If we did'nt our business would be under serious threat and lets face it, legitimate competition is hard enough without these shysters ripping off designs we have invested heavily in.
I was recently in Shenzhen China and visited the fake watch market (Lowu commercial city for those planning a visit) to pick up a couple of 'beaters' for everyday wear.
Point being every single vendor spotted my Breitling as genuine at a glance this is despite most of the fakes being very very good. Even when I told them it was a copy they would not believe me. If copy salesmen can spot a real one then surely Rolex vendors can spot fakes.

So what's the law in this country - different to Belgium? It sounds like the case was brought under national legislation rather than an EU wide agreement, but there have been moves - indicated in previous posts - towards community compliance on intellectual property and commercial brand rights of all sorts.
Last time out in Thailand, the Sukhumvit Road street market had virtually no fake Armani or Versace polo shirts on show, the vendors said there had been a police crackdown. In that context you have to suspect a major donation from the fashion houses to the BiB (boys in brown) police ball fund.

This might backfire on Rolex though. Quite a few of their genuine customers also own fakes because they're worried about theft. Prosecuting your own customers is not a good plan.
I remember there was a spate of watch thefts a while ago, havent heard anything recently but can see the benefit of owning an original but wearing a fake for day to day stuff
Seems silly.. Why buy the original in the first place. When i got my Omega, (granted it was just over a grand and a bit), I used to wear it on the boat at sea, bashing about, in amongst the hydraulics, risked losing it over the side, etc... I payed that money to wear it, not keep it in a box.
