OK for crimbo I was thinking of getting a toy for the 'liz.
I want a sat nav system to replace the stereo. What I mean is one of those units that have the pop out screen that is a stereo and sat nav in one. The problems are going to be that the screen is going to have to project from the unit a long way because of the dash overhang and it is also going to have to be able to angle towards the driver.
It will also need to have digital radio.
Is there such a thing? Are they any good?

Sure they exist mate (not sure about the digital bit though), some examples from my local specialist here...

There are cheaper ways if you can get it and fit yourself, or find it online and get a local place to fit (which really is a piece of p!ss).
This site is very cheap and deliver quickly with no hassles...

Personally I'd be more inclined to go for a decent HU for your tunes and a separate SatNav like TomTom or Garmin. The cost will probably be similar or cheaper and you'll have a more flexible system.
One thing to remember is where the height of the screen will be compared to your line of vision. In an Elise it's not going to be very good from a head-unit jobbie.
I've been using a TTG300 mounted on the windscreen, centre bottom to the left of the instrument binnacle and it's superb. Right in the line of vision, easy to adjust as you drive etc. Alternatively to the right next to the binnacle is excellent.
www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk is a good site for GPS SatNav.
Either option you choose will be a nice present to self!
P.S. I'd also recommend going and having a play around with what's out there before you buy, do a little reseach on the maps etc. and personal experiences of others. Some are utter cack.

HI Gooby,
I uprated my sound system a couple of months ago and put in a Panasonic avic 1XR dvd/sat nav unit which is one of the best on the market. It has an adjustable screen so that it will reach around the overhang although it is very snug and does rub slightly. Its a pretty sophisticated piece of kit and has a motion unit (which ive put under the passengers seat)to determine which way around the car is facing and so it will never lose you in built up areas/tunnels.
It also has automatic rerouting (FOC)should there be any traffic on the roads. It is all touchscreen and you can add a tv module if you want to watch neighbours at lunchtime!
Its not cheap (about a grand) but easily one of the best on the market. I prefere the user interface of TOM TOM which you could hard wire in but if you want it all neat and tidy stick a proper one in.
Any questions, let me know

I think you can add on DAB. Im surpised it wasnt DAB out of the box. Having said that the radio is excellent, much, much better than the standard blaupunkt.
You might also want to think about upgrading the speakers and getting a subwoofer on the rear parcel shelf, not for loud bass, but to hear your music much much beter.
