I've got a laptop HDD in a case... has two USB connectors (to draw power) and doesn't need external power.
Good old ebay...
What size memory and does it drain the power like a Ferrari's alarm?

The 5GB one is fine, the 10GB one is a bit of a sod (cheap HDD) and the 20GB needs a LOT of power, to the extent that some laptops don't work with it, unless you have a powered hub.
I've bought the cases of eBay for around £10 - £15 and then put a laptop HDD in... in all cases it's worked.

Can have a nose about tonight... might have a laptop HDD lying around... somewhere between 4 and 10GB...

That's basically what I use... I just buy the empty cases of ebay and put in old laptop HDD's.

Rather than drain the laptops battery life (one thing my new one lacks) is there anything out there with self contained power. Sort or rechargeable USB drive ?
Not seen one yet![]()
Could always get one of those photo storage devices... they're battery powered.
iPod?

Not had a problem yet...
I use one of these:
www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=225842
fitted with a 30Gb 1.8" hard drive bought from ebay. It seems to draw no more power than the same drive would internally, which is next to nothing as these drives are designed for sub notebooks and ipods etc.
Cheers
