R32 or Clio V6
Discussion
OK so the lease on my trusty Golf 4motion is over in Feb 03 so it is time to think about a replacement company car .
I would like an element of practicallity but this can be partly waived in exchange for some thrills, i have tryed an R32 and it was an absolute hoot to drive , but i saw some pics of the new Clio v6 in Autocar the other week and it looked the dogg`s .
Any advise or alternatives you good folk can suggest

I am in Sweden so i should be able to get an R32 , no back seat`s well i can live with that until i need to get 3 people in it then i can curse, the test drive i had in the R32 really was a lot of fun this car really is a hoot to drive and before any one say "ah soggy old Vdub" i can assure you it is wound up very tight .
But as 135sport put it i am strangely drawn towards the Clio and i really dont know why , i never thought i would consider a Renault as a car of mine, and if they have sorted out the problems that they had with the old model who knows , price wise they will be about the same ,, damn it what to do............

The VW might have the BHP figure but its so heavy the performances isnt all that good and the current V6 Clio has been universally slated so they have either risen their game immensely or the new one is the same.
Matt.
I did think of the 147 but i dont really want FWD , i know the Golf is very heavy but as i said to drive it
is a revelation (to me anyway)

Hopefully the 2nd generation Clio will allow you to get close to that!
I think you have hit the nail on the head there mate.
Yes the Golf is four wheel drive , in the 4motion its a very good system and very funny in the snow
Found this....
New-Look Clio V6 (27/09/02)
The current-shape Renault Clio has been on sale for more than a year now, but it has taken an understandably long time for the mid-engined V6 version to catch up. In fact, it is only at the Paris Show that the second-generation V6 has been formally announced.
Although the principle is the same, the new car is substantially different from the one we tested some time ago (it's even built in a different place - TWR no longer has the assembly contract, which has instead been given to the Dieppe-based Alpine company).
The 24-valve engine, previously producing 230bhp, has been uprated to 255bhp in a process which involved creating a completely new top end. 0-62mph acceleration isn't quoted exactly, but Renault claims it is now under six seconds compared with the previous 6.4.
The body styling is aggressive as ever, not least because the wheel size has been increased from 17" to 18". Other changes include closer ratios for the six-speed gearbox and a sharper gearchange action thanks to a 20% reduction in the amount of lever movement required.
Renault has also paid close attention to the suspension, but the fact remains that this Clio has a tall, heavy engine within a relatively short wheelbase. While we can't make any definitive comments without driving the car, we still remember the UK press launch of its notoriously tricky predecessor, when Renault made sure that British journalists were given no opportunity to drive quickly round corners.

Havent read too many reviews of the R32, only seen the spec really.
I would however not advise a Clio V6....waste of money. My cousin has a Mark 2, Clio 172 with the only mod being a Piper Cross induction kit, his mate has a V6. I was in the car when they were racing round the country roads in Wales and the differnce was minimal, although the V6 had a lead the 172 was right up its arse all the time, whether we were on strights on cornering it proved no faster. I have also seen stats on the two cars pitched against each other strip racing, again the time difference was minimal. I think the V6 is just too much of a chubby chap. I'd go for an S3 or Scooby WRX if i could afford one.

Yes true enought but they are saying that on the the new one they have adressed all the old cars problems ,,, gulable me never
Podie, yeah good point about build quality after living with the 4motion for 3 years it would be hard to accept less than bomb proof reliability which with the clio i would not be so sure of .

Get a series 2 one, more power and better handling.
As you might have guessed I have a thing for these babies.
I've heard the R32 aint all it's cracked up to be. Waaayyy too heavy, though you could say that about any Golf, bar the MK1. I also heard that the 4wd is only part time and then it only transfers 4% of the drive???
Someone correct me on this as it seems REALLY silly

Going back to Big Chris's point about the 172/V6 being similar in performance... well the power to weight ratio is not that different, so it's not to be unexpected.
The V6 doe shave better balance, and although it's more twitchy (going on the Mk1 here) it's still bloody good fun.
Although the Clio is fun, I'd go for the R32 as being a better option. Better build quality, higher residuals, and the security of 4WD - and probably easier to sell on in the future becuase of those reasons.
