I am currently looking for a digital camera to take on my travels and came across this Canon today in a local Jessops store. Cheapest I have seen it for a 'Jessops price match' is 199 quid.

Canon Ixus50. Its tiny, seems well built, has a view finder and 5 MPs.

Any thoughts or experiences on this model?

not of the 50 but we've had a 400 for a few years now and have been very happy with it. How it compares with other makes I don't know but at the end of the jpegs and prints we get from the Ixus are perfectly good for a P&S camera.

I have recommended this to several people now as the one to get, and they have all been very chuffed. Pictures are great, and one of my friends has the waterproof cover for it which is very handy.

Top recommendation, will get one myself when I get round to it.

It gets the thumbs up from me, haven't a clue when it comes to photography and I have managed to get some brilliant shots from it!

I would invest in nothing less than a 512mb memory card, even a 1gb if your budget will stretch. The movies use loads of memory!

Snap! We have the 400 and can't fault it apart from a slightly over-long shutter delay (i.e. kids & animals tend to have moved before the shot is taken!)

Apparently there is a plastic cog in the zoom mechanism that can fail but I understand that all models after the 400 had this changed to a metal part. Ours is fine, though.

Best Hurry as the Ixus 50 is now discontinued and the replacement will be much more expensive. If they have any, buy it now !!

I would heartily recommend the Canon IXUS'. We have one as our "chuck it in a pocket" kind of point and shoot and the quality for these snapshots is just great.

Hmm that looks oddly like a Powershot SD400/SD450... is the Ixus series the equivalent of the Powershot SD series in the US?
