Is this going to be any good? What's it got compared to say the current PS2?
Basically it's a lot more powerful so the games can be bigger, better graphics/sound etc. And it supports HDTV.
If you can wait till next year, the PS3 will be out, and it's twice as powerful as the XBox360 and is fully backward compatible with all PS1/2 games (the 360 isn't fully compatible with all XBox games)

The biggest problem with the PS3 is thet the Xbox 360 will had its arse to it on a plate in terms of online gaming. Apparently MS are working on the top 100 games to be backwards compatible.

Not entirely true. The PS3 will be about as powerful as the 360. At the moment there are serious doubts as to how compatabile the PS3 will be with PS2 games. The latest Japanese PS2 is not fully compatible with PS2 games!
I understand that of you want one at release date that you've got better chance if you opt for the £210 machine, you get the basic machine but the demand isn't as high. From what I've seen the games seem to be priced around the 50 notes mark at the moment so you'll have to budget quite a bit on top to get good use. Personally I'm gonna stick with me normal X'er and look to get the new one in 6 - 12 months time when hopefully prices will have dropped for the console and games, my reckoning is that the the release of the PS3 will help a bit but I doubt it.
I recently pre-ordered through toys-r-us, but had to go for the full systems + 3 game combo as that's all they had left for pre-order.
It seems some retailers are taking endless pre-orders with a 'may not deliver' disclaimer whereas others are limiting the number of pre-orders they will accept. Toy-r-us fall into the latter category so I'm hoping that means I have a better chance of actually recieving it when i expect to ...
In my view the USP of the Xbox 360 Vs the PS3 is that the xbox has built in 'Media Center Extender' functionality which will enable me to network it with my media center and distribute music/vids/pics around the house...Cool!

Can't you do that with the current XBox though? And PS3 claims to have built-in HD, wireless, la-di-da, which should allow media center type functions.
