OK, who here has bought a new car ever, and why?

If you can afford the very thing you want, then that's one thing, but relatively rare. More often, someone will have a budget, say, 15,00 pounds, and will have the choice of something that's not really their thing, or a secondhand car that is much better.

To pick an example, if you want a family saloon, 15k will buy you a Mondeo, if you go new, or an S4 (2 years old, 35k miles) if you go secondhand.

Why buy the Mondeo? It's not even less likely to break down.

Ought t exclude floeet owners too, who have no choice.

I'm genuinely curious.

The only time I've bought brand new, was when I bought my Fireblade. In that case, my budget was comfortably enough to buy brand new (6k pounds)

£20 is a top deal. I managed to get £30 for my Sierra, but it did have 4 months test on it.

Because otherwise there would be no second-hand cars for sensible people like us to buy. I would only ever buy a new car if I had won the lottery or something, but even then it would still be pretty foolish.

personal lease deal - for the daily drive (for my wife) is quite attractive - ok its not really buying the car since you hand it back at the end of three years. they take the depreciation risk
you just pay the lease.

Thing is with a new car - you can order new cars ! so when models first released - you can have one. also any trim options pack etc you want - and colour and so on. this appeals to some people

Never underestimate the foolish people to whom snob value counts ! ( Hint - they mostly own tvr's )

The only new car I have ever had was an '86 Cavalier as a company car. I took it home all proud only to wake up the following morning with the car wheel-less on the road outside my house. A week later some pissed bloke drove into it head on whilst parked.

The new car novelty wore off very rapidly.

Edited to say I know it's sad being proud of a Cavalier.

I don't mind paying for something if its worth it... so I never buy brand new cos you're just paying a stack in taxes. (I give Tony Blair enough for his 5 kids thanks.)

Still, if there are people who want to throw away good money, that's up to them... plus I feel better about buying a second hand chimaera than i would about buying a brand new 3 series saloon (roughly about the same price at the time for a mid-spec model)

In 1996 I bought my first and last new car. A Volvo 850 T5R Estate - just had to have it - £33k. Two years and 50k mls later I finally managed to get £17.5k. What a waste of money. More recently I had a 993 carrera 4 - bought secondhand for £35k, sold a year later for £34k. That was more like it ! Even if I won the lottery I would absolutely never buy a new car again. New bikes are a bit different as they are not a lot of money to start with. Nowadays depreciation brings me out in a nasty red rash. My wife bought a secondhand 106GTI a year ago for £7k - did 12k mls and decided to get rid of it before the mileage started to kill it (it already felt like something with twice the mileage). Tried all ways to sell it and failed - best offer £3.5k. 50% depreciation in a year on a 3 year old car. Shocking. I feel that all modern cars seem to suffer huge depreciation nowadays. My wife swapped the 106 for a totally immaculate Merc 190 Cosworth with a massive history file, every Mot etc. I will eat my hat if it is not worth the same money in a years time.

Only ever bought 2 cars new with my own money - my Chimaera & my Impreza P1
Why a new P1? Well you couldn't get 'em second hand when I bought it....
Why a new Chimaera? I wanted to run it in myself, and I also wanted a full factory no-quibble warranty in case stuff broke (fortunately it didn't)

Would I do it again? Probably not - but I'd always promised myself a new sportscar if I could afford it one day. (This day has been & gone sadly ) Still, no regrets....

For me, when I bought My S4, I COULD have rounded up 47k for a new one, or I could pay (and did) 20k for a 2 year old model.

I don't think I could see 27k worth of value in the brand new one, with the fact I'd have had to wait a few weeks too. There's a world of difference for me between the two prices.

An Elise, three motorbikes, and a holiday's difference in fact.

Bought a Chim new because I had always wanted a TVR, sort of a dream come true type thing, then bought a T350C because I have been hankering after a Cerbera and a Tamora for some time now, saw this, thought 'WOW! Gotta have it' and decided to do the deed.

Matt.

Bought the imprezza new cos it was the car I wanted and there were no second hand ones around at that time (there were a fair few by the time the 9 month waiting list was over).

Was about to buy a 2ish year old TVR but I think I've decided to buy new because:
a) u don't know how they have been looked after
b) u can have the colour combo u like.
c) it's just nice!

Would never have thought about buying a new car for the simple reason of value for money - you can get a far better car for your budget. BUT... I have just put my order in for a T440R which although seems a bit foolish, I did it for the following reasons

1. I currently have the Cerb on a 3 year lease purchase scheme and so would be looking to upgrade the car in approx 18 months time. With a 12-18 month waiting list for a T440R the likelihood of being able to trade the Cerb for a 2nd hand version would be fairly slim.

2. The new car experience in being able to choose the colours, trim, spec etc. And to know that the car is run in and looked after properly.

3. I wanted to be able to move across to a better and different TVR than the Cerb and IMO this is the only TVR that fits that mould and this is the only way I could see myself driving the car I want in 18 months time.

Edited to say that had the T440R not had such a limited build run, I would have waited and bought 2nd hand.

Bought my Elise new, in the end. Was originally looking at a used one, but at the time prices for used were still close to the new price (this was winter 1998).

Decided to go new, as the purchase was a dream to have a Lotus since I was 16, so if nothing goes wrong with my circumstances I will not get rid of it. So depreciation is not an issue, as I'm not selling.

My mum just bought her first ever new car (at 49) because she just wanted the nice things that come with it; the warranty, the back up, no unpleasant history, and not living in someone else's fag ash. She has accepted she will run the car into the ground, so hence does not see the depreciation picture either.

Previously had a new company Corrado a few years ago.
Never thought I would get a new car with my own money.
earlier in the year I saw a cancelled order for a new Carrera 2 at a good discount to uk list on the internet. An hour later I had ordered it,the next day i had specced it.The car arrived 1 month later to my exact spec with 8 miles on the clock.
I figure I won't lose too much on it in a year. Also it has been an absolute joy running both the car & myself in.I know exactly how it has been treated, looking at the price of 3-5 year old cars it looks like a reasonable prospect to keep without any nasty secrets and spurious warranties of second hand cars.

The new mini seems a good buy, a friend has traded his 1-year-old Cooper in against a Cooper S, he lost £500 in a year! Not bad going at all!

Guess I'm in the minority here. I like to have cars that are specced for me, coloured for my tastes. I have bought 4 new cars in the last 4 years, but that is it for me. Next car will be scond hand, and probably a cerbera
