Opinions please on wheels for my car!

I currently have two sets of tyres, one set on the car (and thus on the wheels) and a set of winter tyres in my cellar.

Having to swap the tyres on and off rims twice a year can't be that good for the tyres and it actually costs more than I thought.

Car is currently on Boxster type 17" wheels, and there's a bit of corrosion under the lacquer. As these are the cheapest 17s from what I've been told, I was thinking of retaining these and putting the winters on for winter use, and then getting a nice set of wheels for summer use.

Any recommendations? I love the look of the 5 spoke 996 wheels on the 993, but I'm *very* reluctant to go to 18 inch wheels for handling and weight reasons. I have no interest in heavy 'bling' wheels, equally I don't want high maintenance or fragile wheels (those BBSs in johnny_senna's old thread made my wallet hide for the rest of the night)

Also, 18s will require me to fit a steering brace.

I'd appreciate all opinions on this, and *really* appreciate linked pics of 993s with the recommended wheels - it's the only way I'll get a good idea of what they look like :) TIA everyone ;)

I don't use anything bizarre - should all be on Ted's 'smiles legend' page...

What about these:

http://tinyurl.com/7aydz

One piece so shouldn't be too hard to maintain, look quite sexy. Also original Porsche item, so doubt if they are too heavy.

The 993 readers cars article in Total911 made me think seriously about the BBS style wheels.

Dan

Edited to add: why do you object to fitting the steering brace? I would have thought this was a good idea in any event and only E39 from Carnewal.

Yes fitting that steering brace is a nightmare...it will take 15-20 mins and probably cost you 30 quid!

It's no big deal and was fitted on later factory cars supplied with 18" wheels.

I specced the 18" Carrera 5 spokes on my 996, they looked fantastic...but not as amazing as they look on a 993..... These wheels are light, strong much cheaper than BBS...what are you waiting for???!!

^^ cheers, will have a look at Design911's website.

I didn't object to the steering brace, it just expands the job from a simple bolt-the-new-wheels-on job I can do at home with a wheelbrace and a torque wrench, to something I need to book the car into the garage for.

I don't have either the space or the tools to work on the car myself unfortunately, however I *can* replace the wheels

OK, cross posted - can this be done with the car on the ground and with basic tools. I don't have a garage, a driveway, a ramp or a jack I'd feel comfortable working underneath of.

If those 18" 996 wheels really are lighter than the 17s I'm currently running then I'd definitely be interested, since I think they look fab. I'd need new tyres though, and I'd be tempted to get silly trackday specials since I've got winters to get through, well, winter

Cyberface, the smiley was in my post, just after the 17" reference. Hope you find what your looking for. I was going to post the link to a number of retail outlets, but thought that contravened the name and shame policy here. Many retail outlets advertise wheels etc on ebay, including the well known ones :-) (intentional smiley)

That, my friend, is absolutely beautiful.

It's a wide body though, hopefully they'll look just as good on my old narrow C2. Hopefully no suspension / spacer / hub mods required??

I'm also interested in those brake ducts where the fogs normally are...

Anyone here who's swapped OEM 17s on normal 993s for 18s got comments on ride / handling compromises?? I wasn't going to consider 18s but I've seen a comparison chart on the intarweb somewhere that states those 5-spoke 996 wheels are actually lighter than my 17" standard wheels!!! Are the necessary tyres massively more expensive?

Apparently the 'proper' turbo hollowspoke 18s for the 993 are the lightest, but for some reason I don't like the look of them. And for me, barring being able to afford exotic mag alloys, wheel selection is pretty much only an aesthetic consideration - unless they screw up the handling. I really *like* the handling of my current setup, it's not snappy and moves around predictably.

Presumably the usual suspects retail-wise can provide these 5-spoke 18s? (is there a proper name for them?)

thanks again guys

It's not mine unfortunately, but i'm considering them for my silver 993 too - slightly heavier than the hollow spokes i now have 2 sets of, but that's okay.
Most places call them '02 Carrera 5 spokes (Jasmine, Design911, etc.)
Decent tyres should cost you around £600 or so in narrow body sizes (Conti, Bridgestone, etc.)

Yes it's getting on for 2am and I've got the rock-n-roll lifestyle of messing around on the internet on Sat night cos the other half is ill and retired to bed 6 hours ago

This wheel thing is confusing me. I checked a popular supplier (Design911 - I bought my Supercup pipes from them and they seemed efficient so no name-n-shame) and they have these exact cool looking wheels sold as packages including tyres, much cheaper than getting the wheels alone from Carnewal and then sourcing some tyres. Downside being I can't plump for silly trackday mental tyres, but that's probably sensible.

However they have two fitments:
996 - 8J with 225/40 and 10J with 285/30
Boxster - 7.5J with 225/40 and 9J with 265/35
The offsets appear to be different as well.

Which are appropriate for a narrow body 993?? To be honest, going from 255 rears to 285 (as per 996 spec) doesn't appeal at all, I'm sure that would significantly change the balance and handling. Given I've apparently got Boxster wheels on my car already, would the Boxster fitment bolt straight on? At least the Boxster fitment isn't too much of a width increase over what I'm using now.

Has anyone tried this? Any gotchas - like certain tyres sizes very hard to get (I'm thinking of the aggro the GT3 boys had with Dunlop SSRs here)

Also, I assume these are all new wheels, is there any real no-no about buying them second hand?

Sorry for all these questions at this time of night - perhaps I should try the Rennlisters, though I'll probably end up getting deluged in stats, facts and strong opinions

VS - is that photo your copyright at all? I'd like to piss about with it in Photoshop to see what it'd look like with my dirty Aventura green bodywork

PS - it was 1:55 am when I wrote the comment above, the clock's now saying 1:02 am???? WTF? Pistonheads implemented time travel?

I looked into the Carrera 5 spokes in 8 & 10", the offsets were close enough to 993RS not to cause a problem with the standard 18" fitment on narrow bodies of 225 front and 265 rear tyres.

Err, the clocks went back this morning ...

Anyway back to the wheels let us know how you get on. Surely a quick call to Design911 will resolve the fitment question? Obviously its Sunday and you'll have to wait til tomorrow ...

Check if they are genuine or aftermarket - for 993 narrow body fitment i'd expect a 7.5/8.0/8,5 inch width at the front, with an ET around 50 or so.
Rears you should be looking at 10 inch width and an ET around 65.
I suspect the 996 fitment is this spec, but you'd just want 265 instead of 285 rears.

Yes, i woke up at 10:20 this morning according to my Breitling and had a minor heart attack (meeting at Bracknell, pre-VW, at 10:45) then realised about the clocks

I changed my 16" cup wheels (standard fitment) to 17" sport classics on my '94 993 C2. Bought them from 'Jasmine motorsport' at one of the Porsche meetings, where they fitted them and took my old ones in part-ex. You can see them on my home page ( I think!) They were also fitted to Boxsters. Might be worth phoning them for advice as they do this sort of thing all the time ( offsets etc...)

VS - cheers - just spotted that both Porsche original 5-spoke '02 Carrera wheels *and* replica 'made in the EU' copies of that wheel.

As I'm only comfortable putting 18s on the car if they aren't a weight penalty (as the original Porsche wheels appear to be)... are the replicas the same weight? Or are they duff copies that aren't worth bothering with?

TBH there's not a lot of difference in it price wise, the dilemma for me really is whether I get a wheel and tyre set (which appear to be competitively priced from Design 911) and get 'normal' tyres, or get the wheels separately and then get some ridiculous sticky rubber just for a laugh

I had Yoko A048Rs on my old 205 GTi and they were excellent, and I found them OK in the wet. I do fancy trying a trackday tyre on the 911
