What a dumb thing, I took the cover off my '99 Chim and during the process the wipers came on (had to turn ignition on to release boot, last time I drove it wipers were on) and then they stopped.

Accoring to to the bible it's a broken pin on the wiper motor wheel in the wiper box, fine, my mechanic tells me he has to take the dashboard off and cut a hole in the bulkhead so he can get to it.

Sounds so rediculous, this must be common, any others had this problem? I've had her for 4 month and this is the second problem, which looks expensive, can only think it's another poor piece of design work.

Did they move the wiper motor at some point?

Mine (96 500) is on the passenger side wing inside the engine bay up against the bulkhead. Removal is by a couple of nuts, the motor will then come out far enought to undo the tiny bolts on the lid, and you can then unhook the pin (or not in yor case ) and remove the motor.

10 minute job, all from in the engine bay.

Mine is a 2000 and I am sure I spotted the wiper motor on the driver's side up by the brake light switch somewhere.
Have not had to touch it so cannot comment on access thankfully.

Yeah, I think they did move it. Mine's a 1999 car and, not having had any trouble with it, I don't know where it is, but I've seen photos of earlier cars with the motor in the position you describe and it certainly ain't there!

Your mechanic is refering to the the wiper wheel boxes, these drive the actual wiper arms and are situated in the fiber glass underneath each wiper arm. They are a nightmare to get too, and what your mechanic says is true. But if the pin is in the wiper motor than that is easlt accessable from the engine bay.

Resurrecting an old thread in case anyone needs the lucas part numbers for the wheel boxes which will eventually strip and it's harder to come by or for a reasonable price. Currently on fleabay under this part number.

Just to update, I had the part number wrong. The lucas wiper wheel part number for a 96' chim is 72965.

Hell of a job on an early car as cutting tools in the tight space are a chore but once you have a big enough hole from inside the dash the wiper wheel boxes can be replaced fairly easily along with refreshing the washer jet tubes while you are there.
