My wife took the car out for a drive and everything is fine for about 6 miles. She stopped at a red light and the oil pressure dropped to zero but bounced back up to a normal level (40 to 60). It happened a second time at another set. Do i take it this could be low oil as no oil warning light was lit. She will be checking it tomorrow to my mind at ease. Could it be anything else??

Its always a good thing to check the oil level manually every day. Dont rely on the oil-light or oil pressure gauge!

Having 'some' oil is NOT enough for these engines and excessive wear'n'tear will inhibit itself - effectively reducing the engine lifespan!

Would the sudden drop be due to a oil surge or a dicky spring. I know it's the 60k question but if the oil level is ok could it be any of the above.

There can be problems with the pressure spring, joo provides an uprated spring. But in your case, the fact it works one minute and not another could point to faulty sender unit, or just basically low on oil, in which case - NOT GOOD! as you basically could be starving the pump!

a) Check the level - if low, then top her up

b) if level is ok, just pop over to your regular mechanic for some further analysis.

The oil pans in the V8 cerbies are baffled (be it cheaply done), and sometimes even though you have some oil, on G's, the oil gets pushed around the baffles, which is why its not adviseable to let the oil go too low on them...

Fingers crossed its just a tad bit low on oil. Good to know about the sender unit as I am sure my local indie will be able to sort it for me. As for the spring, Joo will be seeing me at some point I am sure during my Cerbera ownership. Thank you for the reply.

I thought the gauge was a mechanical unit. If a mechanical unit has a sender then excuse my ignorance and stupid reply but surely a mechanical gauge just reads the pressure it 'feels'.

It could also just be a dodgy pressure-valve which releases excess oil pressure at high rpms/cold temp and prevents the oil draining back into the sump basically "unpriming" the oil pump when the engine has stopped - not good.

It could be a number of things, like with anything, the number of times there have been problem posts and the solutions have been something completely simple but when the oil-pressure jumps around - its always a good sign to stop using her until investigated! - oil is the lifeline, you ignore that, and permanent brain damage!

I would personally recommend she gets checked out, if the gauge/sender aint faulty, it could be a number of other things which may need to be look at, but just for peace of mind, I'd have the pump, pressure valve etc - the lot checked out... treat your car like a person and she'll live long and prosper.

I'm sure joo has had a few with the gauge dropping to 0 with oil light flashing on? Joo, whats your professional take on this?

From lots of experience,

Oil pressure reads zero on left hand bends = Low oil

Oil pressure reads zero at idle = Duff spring / valve

Probably the latter.

Miraculously Yes , when the valve / spring fail., revving the engine apparently makes the oil pump work harder & pushes the valve open.

p.s., if this doesn't work within 10 seconds, you'll be buying a new engine.

On my Cerb, the left hand turn's create zero pressure when the oil level is reading around the medium mark, I now keep it on or above the high mark, I'm not confident enough about that dip stick (especially as mine's got more twists in it, than a pig's dick.)

The oil will be checked tomorrow so i will keep you upto date on the out come. If the spring is up the spout is it a drama to use the car.

If it's the spring, I would not reccomend using the car.

I don't think the engine will thank you for starving it of oil

I think you need 20 to ensure you are providing a minimum to the cams at low speed, so basically if it isn't getting there, stop!

Right I'll tell what happened, while sat at traffic lights, I heard a click sound, looked down and the pointer on the oil pressure dial had swung to zero, hit the metal stop then went straight back up to about 70-80. The car was warmed up, it did this about 3 times, was sat in a long traffic que at the time.

Have checked the oil today and its full, well over the high mark on the dipstick.

Well its a long dipstick, at one point thought I was pulling a wire out, but its up to the end of the flat bit at the end........I didn't fill it I haven't touched it, can't blame me..............I just drive it and fill it with petrol.

Assuming you have checked the level correctly, too much oil can cause problems. A little over is fine, but if its 'way over', then thats not. I heard something about the crank or whatever' splashing and causing 'bubbles'. May be your problem...not sure.

Another thing is. DONT just drive the car and put petrol in it. Know your car. Always check the oil. Cars vary from car to car, regarding oil usage. My oil/water is checked everytime I go out in it.

To check my oil, the car is left overnight with the dipstick out, and is checked cold. (4.2)

I know that, but it has the low and high marks on, well the oil covers the whole of the flat bit on the top side, and just over on the underside as you pull it out.
