Always fancied one of these and been offered a lovely manual S4 with fsh, very tempted.

Have had a look through the previous 928 posts, some great info in there to help me point me in the right direction..

Does anyone know how the value differs between manual / auto?

Ran a 928GT manual as a daily driver for a while, no real issues, very comfortable, underrated and surprisingly practical although I guess that's not why your looking to buy. Performance is surprising, but really not a nimble car, I think this style of car with it's wave of power probably suits an auto better a la Merc SL, but I have no experience of the 928 auto box.

Definitely still a head turner, the only fears I've heard are electrics and fuel costs. I had no problems with either, let's face it it's not going to be economical. Not a great deal of aftermarket performance upgrades if that's your thing, but quite a few US forums on t'internet, Google 928 and shark.

Red paint not good, heat and long bonnet lead to frequent polishing otherwise you end up with a pink 928! Nice.

Good luck with your purchase, what colour?

Depends on the price, S4 autos can be had for £4000 but you wont find a S4 manual for that (unless you are very lucky),£7-9000 range will will see autos & manuals of similar condition & even the odd GT
Yes manual are rarer, but don't fetch much more. S4 manual & GT's(manual only ) are not the same, GT has 10 bhp more, close ratio g/box & LSD as standard

450bhp at the wheels is easily possible with a bolt on supercharger kit, lots of stuff available from the USA,just not as much available as for other models/makes.

The factory Red paint is ok. it must be resprays that have a problem

Anymore questions, ask away.

Most are manual and for good reason.

A well maintained example in tip top order is a thing of beauty. Budget around £3,000 / year to keep on the road and when someone says they`ve just spent £800 "getting everything done" laugh at them.

Good luck in your hunting.

I owned a 928 S4 manual for 6 years.
I wouldn't touch an automatic and it was hard to find a manual.
I personally ignore people who say the torque curve suits an auto, as I DON'T like Autos, even WITH the 928s clonky long travel change. A 928 manual is a totally different driving experience.
I didn't have any major issues with the car. Consumables went- like the clutch needing to be changed. I also changed the starter motor, the radiator , clutch master cylinder cam belt and water pump- oh and all the ignition leads and coils.

The above is nothing and to be expected and I still rate it was a dependable and relaible car. If the above worries you and you're of the type who doesn't like to peer under the bonnet OR spend money on looking after the car, you're better of buying a new Vectra or Focus or something equally innane (in comparison)and losing the money in depreciation instead

Buy it!!! My first 928 was an Auto and whilst good, the Merc box is no match for the 5spd monster which was created once the car was converted to Manual. On my second 928 at present - a GT this time. Best value for money Porsche out there perhaps - surprisingly quick on track if you know how to drive it, comfortable enough that I do Calais to Geneva in 6 hours with no breaks and reasonably complicated if you are prepared to do your own work...

I even get to do reasonable lap times at the Nurburgring

My 928 GT had 210,000 miles on it with no problems before it grenaded the engine (2-6 rod bearing failure) during a high speed run on the Autobahn. The idiot PO drove the car at 250kph (160mph) for two hours whilst low on oil, which is letal for the V8... No surprises there! Keep the car serviced and maintained to a high standard and you could easily see hundreds of thousands of miles - I know of a 928 GTS with over 500,000 km on the clock and a 928 S with over 750,000 km - both on their original engines...

There are plenty around with 200k + miles that have never been apart & are as good as new, I have 2 on the road at the moment 60k & 203k miles & would say that there is no difference between them in performance or oil consumption. I have also rebuilt a GT engine with 211k miles on it (it was from a write off), on strip down it had no wear so only had bearings & rings replaced because it was apart, its down to how well a 928 has been looked after rather than mileage

P.S.
928UK is having it's 7th anniversary meet 3rd December (Saturday) 2005.
Anyone with a 928 is welcome. We already have 40 928s planning to attend

This year we are meeting at The Plough Inn at East Hendred. The meeting will commence from around 10.00a.m. We are expecting a large number of 928s to attend.
The location of the Plough Inn:

Orchard Lane
East Hendred
Wantage
OX12 8JW

Directions : From A34 at Didcot junction (A4130) keeping to the right heading west if coming from the north or to the left heading west coming from south. On A4130 up from A34, follow through traffic lights, up over the hill and follow past orchard on left and fruit stall on corner opposite. Road straightens past a pub on right then you come up to a roundabout in several hundred yards with a garage on the left corner. Turn right onto the A417 at the roundabout and head towards Wantage. About ¾ mile after going through a large “S” bend, passing Featherbed Lane on right, turn first left at White Road signed to East Hendred. (please drive slowly) Take third right into Orchard Lane. The Plough Inn (large white building) will be a few hundred yards on left past small road to left then beside a large thatched barn to the right. Car park entrance is at the opposite end and will be signed. Up to 100-120 cars can be accommodated.

Please note everyone must drive especially slowly through East Hendred, as the main road in and out is narrow and full of family homes and children.

Hi guys,

I've been driving a 928S 5-speed on a regular basis to and from work for years, and it's been a blast every single day.

It's not a car, it's a lifestyle, so whatever it takes, I'll stay with my 928. I have two other wasserpumpers too, which I drive on occasion, but my preference is "the beast" with the 8 cylinders and that awesome sound. The performance is great, it's not the fastest car on the roads any more, but if anyone wants to run at high speeds, heh heh, they will find that a 1983 928 (which was the fastest car sold in North America at the time) is still very fast, indeed. It is also EXTREMELY solid at speed.

I regularly top 100-mph and it's just routine. Check out my wasserpumper page, I have lots of 928 info there, and you can see my photos of the transaxle rebuild, etc., if you check the MASTER INDEX.
