fall dam it fall....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4386710.stm

A teachers' union wants health and safety rules reviewed after winning hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation for three members.
A special needs teacher in south Wales won £250,000 for back injuries, and a craft teacher in Lancashire £130,000 for asthma caused by wood dust.

A Bristol reading tutor was awarded £14,000 after a bookshelf fell on her.

That's £394,000 of taxpayer's money that's not going into education then. Madness.

[GOMon]Is it just me that thinks a craft teacher should know the risks involved in his job and take appropriate measures to minimise them ffs. And the 'blame someone else' culture rolls on, compensating people for their own stupidity.[GOMoff]

No - that's £394,000 from the insurance payouts.

I wouldn't like to comment on dust inhalation or back injuries but having a bookcase fall on you at work looks like negligence.

This year. And of course next year the premiums will go up to compensate.

And whose fault is it?

It sounds like incompetant management of the labour.

'A teachers' union wants health and safety rules reviewed after winning hundreds of thousands of pounds in compensation for three members' - if the rules are unclear for someone to do their job then who is to blame?

Schools are being encouraged to be more businesslike - can you think of a more unlikely bunch to be able to act in this way? One way or another it is government policy (of all shades) to make schools more independent. Draw your own conclusions.

I once caused a bookshelf to discharge its contents over a teach (by acccident, or at least inadvertently).

He didn't ask for compensation. He gave me a good yelling at, and detention.

That "yelling at" scarred my young mind. I think I'll sue Dorset Education Authority.
