After being SO close for SO long, I finally bought some decent knee sliders and was soon scraping my knee. Well chuffed. When the footpeg started scraping I decided enough was enough and called it a day. My knee slider looks v impressive though

EDIT: Photos removed due to popular demand The above bragging is of course fictional too!

My friend is in Astwood Bank, just below Studley. The Clover is about a mile from there. You HAVE to ride it!!

Haven't had chance to try yet - but im now confident with my knee down, ill search out a decent corner to try. 'The Clover' is a set of 4 long sliproads where two dual carriageways cross, so they're all left handers and I just got progressively faster. Last time I was up there I didn't have sliders, so this time I bought some. First time the slider touched down I couldn't believe it, I was so chuffed, but it just clipped. The next corner I planted it and made sure I kept it there. I just kept getting progressively faster each lap. When I came to the point of scraping the hero blob on two occasions I called it a day!

Mate

Slow down there's some really hard stuff near where you're doing that and scraping the hero blobs on the road is a step too far IMHO

Also, good lad, it took me over a year of Duke ownership to get my left knee down

But back to point one, 3 hours later on the same day saw the whole bike sliding down the track

And I don't think I was that close to getting the peg down

Get yourself on a track, in fact get yourself a trailer and a tow car and get on a track, before you hurt yourself

...or someone else. You're giving yourself no safety margin there and you should get yourself on a track to do this kind of stuff especially with the unpredictable levels of grip available this time of year.

Posting pictures of yourself doing that kind of thing on a website is just daft.

Good work though.

Nice one Dave. However, I've got some hints and tips for you. Your body position is really quite bad. It looks like you've moved your backside off the seat, but you're trying to keep your head in line with the screen. This pushes your knee further which is fine, but it's also pushing the bike down underneath you, motocross style, and using more of the edge of the tyre. It also means that your bike is pretty much on max lean which doesn't leave you much room for further direction change. Try to hang the top of your body further off the bike (into the turn, obviously) and it will help everything about the whole process.

Well played mate.

Guys, am no way qualified to do this myself but a question...

Are we saying that we (me included) shouldn't even be trying this on the road because a) no-one should as conditions can't be guaranteed, or b) get the experience on the track to perfect it first?

Generally don't know, but would appreciate a few pointers. If I feel comfortable around a bend, I do try and get over as far as poss, but is this just an accident waiting to happen?
I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers.

You have to do your own risk assessment. Personally speaking I wouldn't go this far on the road but then that's just me... I'm getting on a bit, don't want to take risks to this degree.

Plod will see it as pretty lethal behaviour though... rightly so if there are other people on the road and therefore the risk isn't solely your own.

Melbourne Loop is the best place to try this.

PS. Knee down antics can be acheived on the road as a default of lean angle. People 'trying' to get their knee down will suffer all sorts of problems like target fixation, anxiety prior to touching down, counter-steering due to shock when the slider finally hits and the fact that you are probably going round and round a roundabout will eventually make you very dizzy. Car drivers will not understand why you are going round and round and WILL pull out.

Best to get the feel of it on track, then when road riding, on roundabouts or bends, if it does happen to occur then great. Don't force it trying. Ultimately, it is best suited to track day riding.
