Steering rack TRE adjusting?
Discussion
This seems like a stupid question and I am 99% sure I am OK but....
I have more left lock than right on the kit, am I correct in assuming that I can simply rotate one TRE a couple of turns in and the other a couple of turns out and maintain the Toe in etc which has been set at great expense?

In theory, if you are careful, then yes. The thread pitch will be fairly accurate, so provided you turn the track rod ends exactly the same number of turns either side, you should maintain accurate tracking.
It wouldn't do any harm to get the tracking at least checked afterwards, just in case - Kwik Fit or similar can do this for a very low cost; it isn't rocket science!
Bear in mind that there isn't a huge amount of adjustment in the track rod ends though - one turn = one thread pitch (ie. not very much at all!), so if your steering is far off-centre, I'd be worrying about wheter the rack has been mis-assembled with the pinion in the wrong position?

Thanks Sam
I think the problem is the centralisation of the rack being awry, it's also fairly high geared due to the geometry of the Hub carriers meaning that a little adjustment will mean more change than normal.
Can't do any of the normal tyre fitters as it wont go on most ramps (too low in the middle).
I will play tomorrow.

there's not a great deal of adjustment to be had on the track rod ends before you start running out of thread.
you may have to take your steering column off, count the number of turns from full lock one way to full lock the other way, wind it back as close as you can to half the number of turns, and then reconnect your column, and get your tracking done.
if you are lucky, some steering racks have a little grommit you can take out and insert a dowel (drill bit)when the rack is centralised.

Get your hands on a Gunsons Trackrite and set it up yourself........its less than the cost of two tracking sessions and at least you don't get the normal tyre fitter oik buggaring up your rack...
In fact I went to get the daily driver some new tyres and they offered to check the tracking. Thinking that they would have the latest gear and I might learn something I agreed . Up they came with the Gunsons trackrite and I then politelydeclined saying that I had one at home just like that and I was probably more practised at using it than they were...
Cheers,
Tony
