Hi,

I'm off to Buy a 2001 model with 11k miles on it for 24.2k

I have done a lot of work trying to trace it's history from the factory to Gatwick TVR to the current owner.

It has not had the ECU upgrade (no history of it) but the car has been fully checked out by a dealer who was going to sell this car for the guy I'm getting it off (the dealer had it up for 28K).

Does this sound like a good deal?

It will be a change from the elise!

Mines had the ECU done (seem to think previous cost was around £3K) but only ECU upgrade I've seen on the price list is now over £4K.

Which makes my £24995 full factory service history M12 thats currently in the classifieds rather good value

Commercial over!!!

I'd get one which has had the ECU done

If the ECU hasn't blown by this length of time and miles, it's probably more likely than not that you wouldn't have any problems.

However, they have been known to go, and it is an expensive change (£2k for aftermarket alternatives, £3-4k for factory MBE) and so you should take that risk into account on the price.

Other ECU options are available (Although not factory backed)
Mine was replaced with an Omex ECU by JNM.
I'm pretty sure Matt FP could sort you out too

No. I'd go with Blots car. My MM ECU went at just over 20k miles, the costs will make your eyes water.

The MM ECU went on one of my cars at 16000-16250 miles/34th or 35th month point.

The silver with red leather 13000 mile car being offerred around up here in Yorkshire is Cat D, so I am told.

And it's the right colour!!

Am I right in thinking it's full new wiring loom as well as ECU that's required when MM ECU is replaced?

Going totally off topic, Obes, how have you found the Omex ECU? I've just got an R5 Turbo 2 for sprints which has the 500 series Omex ECU but I gather the 700 has the option to run anti lag. Which one have you got and have you had any probs??

Joust,

I'm with you on that, I think I've got a good price for the car, if it lasts a year then paying 2k for upgrade I don't see as a problem.
1 year will be prob 6k miles so probably just in the zone of problems (going by peoples comments).

As you say it's at risk, do you think it's a good pice though.

If it's a private sale, then given it's low milage I'd say that it's a reasonable price. The price makes it just over 50% of the new price, which is about where I'd expect a 4 year old car to be now.

As you say, if you are happy "running" the risk then it's probably a fair price, although I'd still try and haggle it down to the 23 area if it was me

Joust,

I have been emailed a few times with people offering their car for sale. They say they have had the ECU upgrade and all the factory upgrades.

What are these other factory upgrades?

Dear All,

On the subject of ECU's the early MM ECU's don't necessarily fail - I know of two cars with original MM ECU's which have clocked up 54K and 36K miles without an issue. However the calibration is much improved on the MBE ECU's and there is no doubt that there is an issue with the early MM ECU's failing. Also cars fitted with the MBE ECU's from new had the water temp gauge fed by the ECU as opposed to a separate sender, removing the over estimating water temp issue.

If you do have an MM car with a failed ECU your choices are as follows:

MBE 975 'Noble Spec' ECU - required new wiring loom as well as ECU however does have the advantage of being factory standard but it is a sealed unit.

Omex - available from JNM (cal already done), sturdy unit and cheap to fiddle with if required. Does not required new wiring loom.

Motec - available from us and all good stockists very hardy unit with lots of options including traction, launch and anti (not recommended on any M12/M400 unless fitted with cast manifolds), cost dependant on options required but does not require new loom.

Autronic - again very very good, cost dependant on options required, does not require new loom.

Pectel - F1 Spec hardware ..... at a similar cost.

In short budget 4K for a factory upgrade to MBE and 2K - 2.5K for an aftermarket ECU and Cal.

Best Regards
Matt
