Hi All,

That dreaded time of year of insurance renewal is upon me and I am having a nightmare trying to get reasonable cover for my 944 Turbo. My existing insurer's renewal has gone through the roof because they have changed their policy on modifications. Last year a 40BHP increase from upgraded EPROMS, and a boost enhancement valve cost me no extra premium- now they are saying they can't even quote me. This is a massive shame because I believe CIS's policy is one of the best on the market in terms of cover offered. Similar tale from people like Norwich Union (shame as they quoted me VERY happy without the mods!)

So, does anyone know anyone particularly reasonable for a 26 year old with a 1987 Turbo with a few slight mods? I've no claims and just one, now spent, conviction for fixed penalty. I also have previous performance car experience, being a convert from the dark side (TVR). Some of the quotes I'm getting are well into 4 figures and I only paid about £650 last year so getting a bit stressed.

Thanks, in advance for you help.

Phil

Have you tried Adrian Flux (08700-777120)?

You might get through on a classic car policy, my kit car did, despite being fitted with a SR2 spec 3 litre V6.

180MPH, £350, hurrah.

Can you not insure it as a second car on a Classic policy???

My 944 turbo costs £225 a year, fully comp, but it's limited to 5000 miles, must be garaged and used a second car.
If you're getting quotes into the 4 figures then you could buy a VW Golf with Tax, MoT and insurance for (I guess) £750, and pocket the difference???

Try Asset Trust. The car can be insured on a classic policy and doesn't have to be a second car or garaged.

Privelege astronomicl for modified cars, as with Adrian Flux (who wouldnlt even insure me). Asset Trust only offer 3 or 5k mileage policies-neither of which is possible as this is my only car. The main mod is only a performance chip from 224 to 265 BHP, less than the standard car later in the production run! Very frustrating.

If you can handle 10k miles / year - try Lancaster (01480 48 48 48) - classic policy - my renewal quote is £770/ year. 944 S2 - I'm 26 with 7 points!

My similarly modded 944t was insured with Norton, and before that Footman James I think
My supercharged 993 was with Bickey on a NU policy

Good luck

Lancaster are about £400 a year for my 951 as a classic car limited to 10,000 miles, on a drive but not garaged (I've no points, no no-claims and am 35). On the down side, they told me that if I chipped it they wouldn't be interested.

Insurance, it's a mystery!
The only thing to do is to ring round as many companies as possible until you are sick of it, and then ring some more. We all have different details to make up a profile to determine our insurance quote.
This is of course then discarded and worked out via Playdough, Um-Bongo and how many seconds it takes for the next person they see to blink divided by the temperature that day.
I paid £800 with Liverpool Victoria last twelve months on my 944 S2, no claims/changes in last twelve months but the renewal figure is for £1,500????
The only mod is Cup 2 alloys, which negate fifty per cent from even quoting. I have just rang round twenty plus companies and have had a quote from £680 to £3000.
£680 is with a company called Swift Sure and will not give me protected no claims. Also I feel uneasy about this company and would feel better to spend a bit more with a (psycologically) 'better known' company. I will be going with either First Alternative or Adrian Flux for around £850 mark.
What I find really frustrating and annoying is ringing insurance companies who advertise in Porsche mags etc and then being no more competetive than any 'run of the mill' insurer.
I did print off the insurance list from Henrys (911virgin) site as a good starting point to ease me into my marathon. Interestingly the three grand quote was from Aon!

Don't you just love insurance companies BASTARDS!!!!

When I bought my 18 year old 3.2, one company with a girls name actually told me that as a 35 year new to driving a 18 year old sports car, I would have to jolly well fuk off and come back in a years time, when they might be prepared to take my money off me.

It really pisses me off that every year we have to hunt around for a new deal, just because they think some of us are so stupid that we will automatically pay a over inflated premium with out really noticing.

And relax................
