With Council tax going up and being extended to cover more roads and other things as well as towards the the normal items of police, dustmen, (not sure about schools)and local services of planning and I dont know what, how does this compare with the Govt tax imposed? I can understand the council tax but have trouble with the govt tax.

Apart from the Armed forces and the NHS (not sure about schools) What does the Govt do to justify Income tax, PAYE, in addition to Road tax, V.A.T, Inheritance tax, Capital gains, stamp duty (as it was called) petrol tax and the other stealth taxes?

It seams that the council are providing almost all the services not the government?

Does it really all go on administration???? Please enlighten and correct the errors of my thinking.

That's a good question, especially as I heard this morning that we can expect council tax rises of 10% again.

No most of the Government tax revenue goes on social security/ variuous benefits payments..it is euthanistically called wealth redistribution.

That and paying for the wages of 6 million public sector workers, plus there pensions.

so if the govt are cutting what they are paying to the council to help provide services then the council will have to cut unecessary service and or increase council tax - ok fair enough.

But if the Govt are cutting back on what they send to the councils, why do they (govt) need more from us, should it be not be less?

It's the councils who are saying they'll need more from us as the government is not paying the extra it paid last year (in the run up to the election...)

It is nearly all squandered. With the exception of health hygene education and infrastructure the rest is wasted on

The Royal Family
Whitehall(The wannabe royal family)
The ceremonial Military (More wannabe royals)
Supporting unneccesary laws such as road law, work law, social law.
Supporting the punishment system which should be self sufficient.
Supporting outdated transport systems such as local train networks and buses which in turn support murderers such as the anti car charities
Global warming research
The 50% of the Universities which need to be closed
The 90% of FE colleges which need to be closed.
The creation of congestion empires for local authorities
The creation of street lighting empires for local authorities
Bailing out stupid ideas like the Dome and the Olympics (If I cant go in my car I am not going)
All local government departments

Tax should be about 2p in the pound and many of the dick heads that are running round our cities causing trouble should be cleaning our shoes and polishing our cars. If I didn't have to pay 40% frigging income tax and local theft plus 350% on fuel, I would happily employ one or two of these plonkers and put a roof over their head in return for a bit of domestic servitude. Even Blair might get a job.

Much of council spending is determined by government policy, however if sufficient funds are not provided to pay for those spending commitments the burden falls on the 25% of council funding raised locally, producing disproportionate rises in council tax.

Your council tax also isnt local anymore.

If you are in a nice area a proportion of the money collected ends up in not such a nice area...

Or conversely if you live in a not so nice area the money collected is often spent where the council members live.

Don't forget the increasing number of civil servants supported by a decreasing amount of private sector earners
