I take it you have the appropriate software DVD player installed?

XP doesnt play DVD's out of the box...

There's a little autorun app you can download. Which may well be called 'autorun'. Creative eh? Give that a whirl.

Try this, it may work:

- go to "my computer" and double click in order to display your drives
- right click on the offending drive and choose "properties"
- select the "AutoPlay tab
- from the drop down box, select "DVD movie"
- under "Actions", select the option "Select an action to perform"
- from the list below, select one of the "Play DVD Video" options, using the software that you wish to use to play the DVD (usually the one that came with the drive)

now, stick in a DVD and see if it works. If it does, you can then repeat steps 1 to 3 and then select autoplay options for all types of media. For most types, I have mine set to "prompt me each time to choose an action", but you can choose whether the machine should do nothing, or ask you, or automatically start a slideshow if it finds pictures on the disc etc.

Sometimes the machine "forgets" these settings, which may be why it worked initially but now doesn't.

Wierd. How about googling for "autoplay" or "autorun" with the model number? Chances are someone else out there has had the same problem.
