Law textbook advice
Discussion
I'm starting an OU law degree in February, but made the silly decision to take two modules at once, one of which assumes knowledge from the other one. Therefore I need to get hold of some kind of textbook that will give me at least a basic knowledge of the things that this 'second' module will assume I know. I got the impression that there are a few lawyer type people on here, so hoped someone might have a decent recommendation?
According to the website, the module that I need to learn about involves the following:
"The course provides a grounding in the English legal system and method and introduces some of the Foundations of Legal Knowledge – Constitutional Law, European Community Law, Criminal Law and the Law of Obligations (Contract and Tort), as well as introducing the techniques of practical legal research."
Any suggestions would be wonderful.
Thank you very much. Have I told you before how lovely you all are?!

LOL Sam!!! That's just about the entire first year of a law degree!!!
The difficulty is they are all individual subjects as far as text books are concerned so you'll probably have to buy books for each individual subject - although if they are covering them in one module you are presumably only skimming the surface of each topic. AND what you're about to learn is that law books are VERY expensive - expect to pay at least thirty quid for a bog standard student book up to huge amounts for practioner texts - I'd imagine the average for my books (1999 - 2002) was £40/£45 per book.
IIRC when I looked at OU I thought they were very good at sending their own learning materials - have you checked with them what they are planning to send you? Is there any chance they could send it to you at the start of the course rather than during it?
Where abouts are you? I've still got a large collection of books and whilst some aspects of them will be out of date they might be of some help - I'm in Bristol if that's of any use at all?

They do say that all course material that you need is included in the packs they send out, but they're only expected to be sent out around christmas. I thought it was probably a good idea to try and get as much of a head-start as possible, as I'll probably need it! Thank you very much for the offer of borrowing some of your books. Will send you an email through your profile about it.
