shreiking squeak

Hmmm....driving home in torrential rain, thought I was getting intermittent squealing from the radio, but got louder after it was turned off. Window down - B***ocks. VERY Loud intermittent shreik/squeak/squeal from somewhere underneath. I am tempted to think that the fact I was driving though a foot of water in the middle of Noah's flood may have had some relevance. However I am unsure if the intermittent nature is simply because it is intermittent, or because the affected part keeps being immersed in water, thus drowning out the sound. My beautiful car remains deeply sexy, but somewhat less so with a high-pitched-metal-against-metal-or-rubber soundtrack.
(think someone scraping nails down blackboard but with pauses)
Sound stopped on stopping car (but engine still running), started again on resuming forward motion. Did not appear to be related to speed
So chaps and chapesses, any suggestions as to the sorts of things that might cause such a noise? I bluffed the wife, confidently asserting "oh it's probably the CV joint" (cos I'd had one go before and it sounded a bit like that though nowhere near as loud) but what bits under the car will make this sound when they are stuffed. and is immersion of relevance?

me too. really need to do some more experimenting but its so foul outside it'll have to wait. what would be really nice is a totally trivial minor problem related to the local environment that has no significance to the running of the car and never comes back. but being an old porsche no doubt it will be day off work to visit crispin, some ponderous scratching of beard and a diagnosis which entails a weeek in the hire polo and a bill with several noughts on the end.

Could be a slipping drive belt.
If you don't want to look under the bonnet in the pouring rain, you could try switching on a bit of electric load while it's not squeeling.
If it starts squeeling, it's time to check the alternator drive belt.
Personaly I would have a look, even if it's raining

My bet is on a loose fan/alternator belt. For inspiration, you'll need to look at this site www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/pcar_com/vbelt2.htm
It looks complicated (yanks always make things look complicated) but in reality is a doddle. I geared up for an evenings entertainment and finished the job in less than 20 minutes - very disappointed.
