Suspension or Diff?

I'm the very proud owner of a '96 4.0 chim, all going very well other than a strange problem with the rear of the car, sometime when turning ( left or right but tight turns mostly) there is a tendancy for the car to try and continue in a straight(ish) line then there is a LOUD clunk from the rear and the car turns normally.

I've briefly inspected the rear suspension and can't see any significany play in the wishbone mounting bushes or joints, so am thinking it may be a diff mount gone or even the diff it's self. The car does feel like the diff is locked i.e the wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed before the clunk.

anyone had a similar experiance?

I had something similar when I had my diff reconned (and at the same time had the propshaft UJs and driveshaft CVs reconned)When I got the diff back and fitted, when you turned the 'slip' didnt work and the inside wheel wanted to turn the same speed and just spun. Had to take the diff off and send it back, twas reconned again and came back fine. Doesnt really help you but is similar?? However I didnt have any clunking, could be diff breakdown or more likely to be joints. check that you have play in the drive shafts. you should be able to grab them and slide them (quite easily) left to right about an inch, if you can't then I would guess either a joint has broken down or seized??!! food for thought...

does it clonk going on and off the gas in any gear - could be splines on drive shaft stuffed or need TLC - if not really bad you can have them removed debured and repacked with grease - did on my last 500 - perfect after this.

The car doesn't clonk any more than expected on/off the loud pedal but does sometimes do it when starting to move in reverse. I hadn't thought of drive shaft splines/joints, I'll check they are free.
