Woo.. i picked up my 1986 944 LUX yesterday, what a car.. so so pleased with it.. absolutely immaculate.. cant stop smiling.. i'm only 23, never thought i'd have one by now.

Just after a little advice on a couple of things:
1. whats a 'usual' price for servicing? excluding expensive things, steering racks, CAM's.. you know, oil changes, brake pads..
2. Whats the best induction to put on, just a simple K&N cone, or something more, i'd like a slightly louder, although cultured rumble..
3. I can hear a slight noise, a bit like the gears on overrun from the trans-axle.. it sounds fine and changes with revs, i'm assuming this is normal as there is nothing between you and the boot..
4. Is the clutch an engine out job? Mine feels a tad high, but I think this is a trait of hydraulic clutches, any comments welcome.

Roll on days of enjoyment.. What a car..

Which bit do you want to know, ive more or less done the brakes myself with the help of my dad, theres not much to them and are resonible in price - servicing is done on mine yearly or every 9k miles at a cost of around £350 from the local porsche specialist (Hartech - Bolton). A cambelt change can cost around £600+

Ebay? as far as I know its fairly easy to replace. If not there are plenty of places in the specialist press that will sell you one 911 & PW?

3. I can hear a slight noise, a bit like the gears on overrun from the trans-axle.. it sounds fine and changes with revs, i'm assuming this is normal as there is nothing between you and the boot..

Youll have to describe the sound its an old car, i hear all sorts when driving my 1986 944s - my daily driver is a company Pug 407 and smooth quiet and a breeze to drive compared to the Porker.

4. Is the clutch an engine out job? Mine feels a tad high, but I think this is a trait of hydraulic clutches, any comments welcome.

To be honest ive no idea, and would like to know too.

Enjoy the car becuase its probably one of the best Porsches every produced and you CAN afford to run it. I love mine so much im looking for a Turbo now or a 964 -911.
Happy porsching

Good choice of car.For a more throaty sound I would recommend a Dansk stainless steel sports tail pipe. Not that expensive.Try eurocarparts.com £109plus vat.Try a k&n panel filter which replaces the standard one. Can't promise any performance gains but it will sound faster.

Typical service is £ 220-£250 + VAT buy 911 & Porsche World, few menu ads in their, also depends where you live
Cam Belt which is every 36-40K is around £ 220 local IF it doesn't need tensioners oil seals etc. Mine did & was £ 470

2. Whats the best induction to put on, just a simple K&N cone, or something more, i'd like a slightly louder, although cultured rumble..

I personally wouldn't because the standard system pulls cold air whereas a K & N wouldn't & would give worse filtration. Now a nice sports s/s exhaust is worth thinking about for around £ 170

3. I can hear a slight noise, a bit like the gears on overrun from the trans-axle.. it sounds fine and changes with revs, i'm assuming this is normal as there is nothing between you and the boot..

THADTS! They all grumble, mine used to give me heart failure when very hot, but have just got used to it. Dealer will say if its OK or not & gearbox oil change may help & is good idea anyway.

4. Is the clutch an engine out job? Mine feels a tad high, but I think this is a trait of hydraulic clutches, any comments welcome.
Nah, unfortunately a gearbox out job & around 8-10hours labour.

Nice one, they are great cars!
If I were you I'd put the induction stuff on hold for now, and treat the car to some Waxoyl or Dinitrol cavity wax in the sills and everywhere else you can inject it. If you love the car you'll want to preserve it?
If you don't own an air compressor with the other basic tools then pay for it to be done, it won't cost much. These cars may have been made from galvanised steel but they are all very prone to rusting.

Depends who does the servicing, ask for their hourly rates.

Although there are quite a few 944's with an aftermarket cone filter, I have often seen posts arguing that this is a bad idea on a 944 because of the position of it. The argument is that being at the very front, it makes it much more vulnerable to fine dust particles going straight through it without getting filtered and ending up straight in your engine. I'm not sure how much truth there is in this, but I chose not to have it on my 944 just to say on the cautious side.
3. I can hear a slight noise, a bit like the gears on overrun from the trans-axle.. it sounds fine and changes with revs, i'm assuming this is normal as there is nothing between you and the boot..
When I was looking for 944's, one Porsche specialist i spoke to told me that there is a lot of noise from the rear compared to a "modern" car because of that same reason.
4. Is the clutch an engine out job? Mine feels a tad high, but I think this is a trait of hydraulic clutches, any comments welcome.
I've seen a quote from JZ Matchtech that was £850 for a clutch on an S2.

Somewhere I have seen a test on the K&N air filter all it did was wreck the engine. The tester found deposits in the sump after just 1000 miles of use. Sports exhaust if you want to make a racket.

I sold the last 944 for my 'project' tvr which is proving to be a right hoot, but a completely different car than the 944. Both are good in different ways. I bought an older M5 as well, which matches the porsche for build quality, another car I would heartily recommend, especially at the prices they are now, they won't drop any further.

I found the build quality of the porsche very very good, nothing went wrong with either of mine, it wasn't the quickest car in the world but the handling was lovely.

I will return to Porsche, I need to have an early ish 911 to sample just what they are like, and probably a 944 turbo, but have to wring the tvr's neck for a bit.

In the meantime, enjoy it, as no doubt mentioned already, make sure the belts have been changed along with the tensioners as that is a very expensive fix.
Umm.....what else....the gearbox, I would drain and refill it as a fix is expensive to rectify.
I put a sports exhaust on mine, can't think for the life of me what make it was but it turned the rather tame exhaust note into something very fruity indeed.

I don't think anyone has regretted owning a 944....well, no one I know anyway.

Well done on getting such a fine motor. I've never owned one, so I can't give any advice, but my old man has a 968 Club Sport which I drive regularly, and I never cease to me amazed at what a superbly balanced, well built car it is. Last year his total running costs; servicing & MOT came to £250. As he said recently, it cost him more to service the tractor-mower!

They can be cheap to run, but new cams etc can cost a lot... one year may be cheap. The next may cost 3k. There are enough bits that can/do go wrong, from water pumps to PAS pumps.
