The number of posts where this happens, and is always unintended, is significant. I can't think of anyone who would actually use that character sequence to intend a winkey smiley, so I can't understand why it is there.

Calm down, calm down

It was a bug. Quote gets converted to & q u o t; and then the trailing ; and the subsequent " turned into a wink. I've reordered the parsing which should sort it out.

Er, it's doing it again/still >>> " <<< shows the quotes, but inserts a smiley instead of the close parenthesis (BTW & FWIW, "brackets" are square) - Streaky

PS - shows correctly in Preview, but incorrected when posted - S
